Dear Editor:
Do you believe kids should have a summer reading list in which they have the ability to choose their own selections? This is an important issue because it is a topic of conversation in districts among teachers and students.
If teachers don't assign a summer reading list, kids will be happy and able to enjoy their summer without the stress of completing a reading list. Besides worrying how many books they will be forced to read, they will most likely not have the freedom to select books of interest.
If districts want to encourage teachers to assign students summer reading and have success with the program, they need to allow the students the ability to choose their own books/genre. That way kids can read the books they want to read over the summer and still make their teachers happy and prepare themselves for the coming school year. It's apparent teachers see the need for reading lists, but isn't it also apparent students should be given the freedom to choose their own book selections?
Affected student,
