Falcons reach D-11 title game

The way regulation ended during last week's District 11 Class AA Boys' Soccer Championships between Salisbury and Moravian Academy, it seemed as if momentum had suddenly swung to the Falcons' side.

After trailing 2-1 for nearly 51 consecutive minutes, Austin Uhl's header into the back of the net with 31 seconds to play sent the game in overtime.

However, an unfortunate Falcon handball gave the Lions a penalty kick opportunity to end the game. It was Jack McCambridge's goal on the extra session penalty kick that gave the No. 3 seeded Lions a 3-2 victory over the No. 4 seeded Falcons, and earned them the District 11 Class AA boys' soccer title on Thursday at J. Birney Crum Stadium.

"I wouldn't pinpoint this on anything," Allinson said. "It was just two good teams battling. Both teams had chances, and both teams had balls going right through the goal mouth."

Despite finishing on the outskirts of the Colonial League playoffs, and seeing three other league teams seeded ahead of them in district play, the Falcons were impressive in their postseason run.

The Falcons defeated Blue Mountain (5-0) in the quarterfinals, and topped No. 1 seed Northwestern Lehigh in the semifinals in their route to the title game. The 3-2 victory over the Colonial League champion Tigers ended their 17-game winning streak. It was the first time since their league opener that the Tigers were on the losing end.

"Our boys have been playing some pretty good ball," Allinson said. "They'll continue to do that. Like I said, we just ran into a little hurdle here, a little hiccup. It's not that we didn't play well. We just didn't get it done."

With a 2-1 deficit, the Falcons had a number of scoring chances in the second half. A diving Moravian Academy goalkeeper saved Danny Walters' shot to the right of the Lions' goal early in second half. With a little more than 21 minutes to play, a Falcon header was just off target in another chance at tying the game.

It wasn't until the Falcons' last threatening chance that they were able to cash in. Off Brett Spencer's corner with under a minute to play, Uhl was able to get his head on the ball and tie that game at 2-2.

"Our boys are scrappy, [and] they fought their way back," Allinson said. "They showed a lot of character and resolve to get the equalizer with 30 seconds left.

While the Falcons got on the scoreboard early against the Lions, that lead didn't last long.

Approaching Moravian Academy's goal line, Walters found a cutting Connor Wagner in front of the Lions' goal. Wagner was able to get a foot on it, and his goal 5:54 into the game gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Not even a minute later, however, the Lions had a response. Phillip Astolfi found Luke Gutekunst for the goal that tied the game 1-1 with 33:21 to play in the half.

Astolfi added a goal of his own late in the first half to put the Lions up by one. Off a corner kick in which the ball took a bounce in front of the Falcons' goal, Astolfi took a shot that landed in the right side of the net that gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage.

"It's nice to win hardware," Allinson said of the silver medals. "It's nice that the boys got to be a part of a district game.

"Our season is not over. We've got to go through, hopefully, a couple state games. We live to fight another day, and hopefully get some icing on the cake."

The Falcons faced District 3's No. 1 seed Pequea Valley in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs. That game was played after Press deadline. See next week's Press for coverage.
