Emmaus faces Del Val in EC

Emmaus football has never won the Eastern Conference playoff championship.

The Green Hornets are looking to change that over the next two weeks.

The first stop on the road to the Class AAAA Eastern Conference championship is a semifinal contest against Delaware Valley from District 2, who went 5-5 this fall. This Friday at 7 p.m. the Warrios visit at East Penn School District Stadium.

"This is great because it allows us to get more work in," said head coach Randy Cuthbert. "It gets us more practice. That is a positive. We obviously wanted to make districts. We gave everything we had against Parkland, but fell a little short. That was disappointing, but we still have a chance to do something that was never done."

The Warriors are the fourth seed in the bracket and will be bringing some new things to the table against Emmaus, the top seed.

"They do some things completely different," said Cuthbert. "They have more of a 5-0 front instead of a 3-4. Offensively, they like to run the ball and they do a lot of different formations, but they are more of a run first team. We match-up well with that. It should be interesting."

Cuthbert has faith in his defense heading into the postseason. He feels the Hornets are playing at their peak on that side of the ball at just the right time this season.

"I'm very confident," he said. "Last week we lost to Parkland, but at the same time they have some great players. They are giving everyone fits. I know we are going to bounce back. These kids are resilient. I know they will get back after it. I will be shocked if that doesn't happen."

Offensively, Cuthbert is implementing some new blocking formations.

"I'm trying to invent new ways to run the ball," he said.

One of the coach's objectives is to get the ball in the hands of playmaker Kyzir White more often.

The Green Hornets (6-3 in LVC, 6-4 overall) are motivated to prove they belong in the subregional tournament, but Cuthbert has a message for them heading into game day.

"This is a chance to win some games," he said. "I think it has been a while since they have won seven or eight games. So I think that is great motivation in itself and getting them ready for this game will not be a problem."

The first-year coach came into this position looking to change Emmaus football. He is wasting no time as he is aiming to bring the Eastern Conference title to Emmaus for the first time ever.
