Emmaus senior Grant Schumaker capped a fantastic high school golf career last week at the PIAA Golf Championships at Heritage Hills Golf course in York.
He finished the two-day, 36-hole competition with a 161, which 19-over par and tied him for 24th place in Class AAA.
Schumaker opened up firing an 8-over par 79 in the first round, just seven shots behind leader Ryan Domes of Manheim Township.
The District 11Class AAA champion had four bogeys on the front nine and added five bogeys on the back nine along with his lone birdie of the day.
On the second day, he shot a round of 82 (11-over). Starting on the back nine, the Robert Morris University-bound Schumaker opened up with three bogeys and two double bogeys on the first five holes. He settled down finish with a birdie, two pars and a double bogey.
Schumaker had a decent front nine parring the first seven holes before finishing with a bogey and double bodey.
"It started off really bad, but I finished strong," Schumaker said. "To be at this event for the first time with all of these great players is still a real good feeling. It's been amazing."
It's been quite a year for Schumaker, who was part of an Emmaus golf team that just missed out making it to the PIAA team championships.
He shot a 75 to win the District 11 championship and also won the Lehigh Valley Amateur. His one-over par 73 at Golden Oaks two weeks ago qualified him for states.
Schumaker called No. 6 at Heritage Hills his best hole of the tournament.
"I had a birdie and a par there," he said. "I was hitting distance shots to the green both days so I was pretty happy with that.
"This high school season's been amazing. And to win the district and just to be here is such a great feeling.
"Our team played great the whole entire season. To finish so close to being here is a great compliment to how we played."
