Frantz's late goal forces playoff OT
During last week's District 11 Class AA girls soccer first-round matchup against Palisades, Salisbury trailed 1-0 for roughly half of the first half and nearly the entire second half.
With under three minutes to play, the Falcons remained down by a goal. Their season was on the verge of ending earlier than they wanted it to.
The Falcons, however, still had some fight left and weren't ready to let the season end on their home turf.
Off a deep Falcon free kick, senior Brittany Frantz scored the game-tying goal with 2:35 to play. After both teams remained scoreless for the rest of regulation and the two overtime periods, the Falcons won 3-0 in penalty kicks to earn the 2-1 victory on Wednesday night at Salisbury High School.
"It was [goal keeper Jordan Kamp's free] kick, and Holly flicked it with her head," Frantz said. "It came in front of my feet and [it was] a left-footed shot."
"I did not want the season to end," said Kamp, the Falcons' sophomore goal keeper. "We've had an amazing run, and these girls are like my family. We knew that we needed to get a goal, and we knew we needed to press. We knew that if we worked together we would succeed."
Following Kamp's free kick, Frantz was able to possess the ball in front of the Pirates' goal. A few dribbles later, Frantz angled a shot to the right of the goal that ended up in the back of the net.
"I just ran up and took it," Kamp said of the free kick, roughly 10 feet behind the midfield mark. "I knew the time was dwindling down. I wanted all my girls up so that we would have a good shot at scoring. My coach pressed me up and wanted me to take it."
"It's a huge win," Frantz said. "It's my senior year, and we lost to them the past two years in Districts [last year] and then the year before that [in the regular season]. It was good to get back and beat them finally before I leave."
Each team had an opportunity on goal in the first overtime period, but when penalty kicks got under way, the Falcons proved why they were the superior team.
Junior Mackenzie Groff, senior Katelyn Bucchin and sophomore Sarah Reilly tallied penalty kick goals, while Kamp saved all three of the Pirates' shots, proving why she was a First-Team Colonial League All Star.
"I was definitely very nervous," Kamp said. "This was the first PK shootout we've had. We had PKs in games before. I'm very used to it from playing for so many years, but I was definitely really nervous.
"My coach took me aside and tried to make me think about different things. It definitely helped me to focus. I went up and just did it."
Palisades took a 1-0 lead in the game when Tatum Hanisak received a pass deep in Falcon territory, and after making a move on a Salisbury defender, her shot gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead with under 18 minutes remaining in the first half.
"Giving up that goal hurt us, but give all the credit in the world to the girls for having the fortitude, the heart, and being able to bring the intensity required to get that goal back," Babyak said.
The win advanced the Falcons onto the quarterfinals against Blue Mountain on Friday. Despite their best effort, however, the Falcons came up a few goals short in the 4-0 loss.
