Falcon finish season against explosive Spartans
It's hard to believe, but the Salisbury football season is nearing its end.
For a season that began in late September against Bangor, the Falcons will suit up one last time for the 2013 campaign on Friday night.
While the team is looking to end the season on a high note, the Falcons (2-7) will travel to play one of the league's top squads in Southern Lehigh (8-1). The Spartans' only loss came against Catasauqua in the second week of the season, and they've reeled off seven consecutive victories to sit atop the Colonial League South Division.
"Just to come out and compete, and give the same effort we've been giving," head coach Andy Cerco said. "The effort is there. We just need to do little things better."
While the Falcons have been accustomed to a number of run-heavy teams in recent weeks, the Spartans' offense is one that is extremely balanced in both the running and passing games.
"They want to run the ball as much as possible," Cerco said. "That's their offense. They run the Wing-T offense, which is based upon running the football and play-action pass.
"It's tough to replicate their offense in one week's time. It's going to be a challenge for our scout team to replicate that. Our guys on the scout team do a great job for us week in and week out trying to give us a good look."
Heading into last week's games, Spartan quarterback Travis Edmond had thrown for 1,234 yards and 13 touchdowns in eight games, good enough for second most in the league. He has completed 73-of-119 passes, while also rushing for four more scores.
His favorite target is wide receiver Jacob Del Priore, who accumulated 44 receptions for 605 yards and four scores through eight games. He led the Colonial League in receptions heading into Friday's game against Palisades, and his 605 receiving yards were second-best.
Also helping in the passing game is Cody Heffelfinger and Trent Silfies. Heffelfinger has totaled 22 receptions for 312 yards and five touchdowns through eight games, while Silfies has recorded 247 yards and four touchdowns on just seven catches in that timespan.
"They've got some good running backs," Cerco said. "Their quarterback is a pretty good kid. They've got some guys that can catch the football at both wide receiver and tight end.
"I just think the balance provides a challenge defensively. We're going to watch film, we're going to practice hard, and give a great effort on Friday night."
The Spartans are also very effective in the running game when they choose to hand it off. Christian Dean Ricci totaled 369 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Zach Wilson has ran for 300 yards and two touchdowns. Silfies has recorded 298 yards and a touchdown in through week eight.
While the offense is capable of putting up big totals on any given night, as is seen by its 33.8 points per game average, the Spartans can also close out the low-scoring close contests.
Last week, the Spartans defeated Palisades 14-3, and in week number four, the Spartans defeated Northwestern Lehigh by a score of 13-7. The Spartans have scored at least 28 points in each of their other seven games.
