Boys soccer team reaches D-11 semifinal
The Emmaus boys soccer team may be playing some of its best soccer of the season and it's coming at the right time.
After a disappointing loss to Easton in the Lehigh Valley Conference semifinals, the Hornets have rattled off two impressive wins in districts, outscoring Pottsville and Northampton by a combined 15-0.
Sophomore Cory Ross had a goal and two assists in the 10-0 win over Pottsville and added another assist against Northampton. He believes that his team learned something from the loss to Easton.
"It was a rough game against Easton and it was a rough loss and it had an effect on us," Ross said after the win over Pottsville. "But we were ready to come out and give it our all."
The Pottsville game also saw senior Charlie Jerry reach a milestone with his 21st assist of the season, giving him the school's record for assists in a season. Jerry beat the old record of 20 set in 2005 by Ty Fenstermacher, who just finished his second season as the coach of the Emmaus JV team. Ironically, Fenstermacher has coached Jerry in youth camps and is glad to see him break his old record.
"I thought he definitely had a bright future ahead of him," said Fenstermacher. "I could tell that he cared about the game and that he wanted to get better, he wanted to listen, so those are good qualities that helped him to be the player that he is today."
Ironically, Jerry also scored his first goal of the season in the win over Pottsville and added number two in the win over the Konkrete Kids, while also picking up his 22nd assist in the 5-0 win over Northampton.
Jerry now stands at 37 career assists, putting him third all-time in the Emmaus record book behind Dave Vassilaros (38) and Fenstermacher (39). Jerry's goal and assist against Northampton moved him into a tie for seventh all-time in points by an Emmaus player.
"I'm glad for him," said coach John Cari. "He's put in a great career and as I said early in the year, when the season's over, his numbers are going to be there and he's going to be one of the best in the school's history. He's number three in assists all-time and points-wise, he's in the top eight, I think. He's had a great career for us."
Jerry credits his success to having good teammates and strong coaches who have helped him to improve throughout his career. Setting the assists record is also something that Jerry believes he'll remember for a long time.
"It's pretty cool," he said. "I've known Ty for a long time and it feels good to beat something of his at this school. It's just awesome.
"Taking everyone's coaching advice and taking all of their directions, I've had great coaches and if you just listen, you'll improve."
The Hornets have now reached the semifinals of the district playoffs and are two wins away from becoming district champions and earning a spot in the PIAA Tournament that begins on November 5.
