Soccer teams are ready for district playoffs
When the 2013 District 11 Class AA soccer tournaments get underway this week, both the Salisbury boys and girls soccer teams will be fighting for a championship.
The brackets were listed on the District 11 website on Sunday.
The girls' tournament kicks off on Wednesday. The Falcons find themselves in a very similar situation to last season.
Like last year when Salisbury was paired up against Palisades in a seven-ten first-round matchup, the No. 7 seeded Falcons (12-6 overall; 8-5 in Colonial League) will host the No. 10 seeded Pirates (6-7 in Colonial League) on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. Last season, the Falcons were the No. 10 seed adn lost to the Pirates, which were in the seventh position.
"I'm very excited about the game, and the girls are excited as well," head coach Rick Babyak said. "It's always good to have a good playoff run. I think the girls understand that and they're feeling it. We'd really like to have a really good run, [and] we don't want it to end yet.
"They remember those things for sure, and they want to rectify the situation."
During last season's 1-0 defeat in districts, the Falcons battled some injuries heading into postseason play. This season, they're a bit healthier, and the Falcons hope that translates into a different result.
"We really struggled to get a healthy team on the field at that point," Babyak said. "We do have some injuries this year, but it's not as bad as last year's situation. We definitely have a lot more depth this year. I feel a little bit better the way we're going into the game."
The Falcons defeated Palisades 1-0 in their final regular season game, exactly a week before their district clash.
"They have the same advantage," Babyak said. "Now they've seen us as well. I'm sure their coaches are going through things just like we are about what to do and what not to do.
"If the girls play the game that they're capable of playing, we'll be fine. That's the bottom line. I think we have to start earlier in this game, and come out firing earlier."
The winner of that game will face No. 2 seed Blue Mountain from the Schuylkill League on Friday.
Northwestern, the Colonial League champions, will be the top seed once the tournament begins. Central Catholic is seeded third to round out the top three.
The boys' tournament will get underway on Tuesday with two opening-round games, but the Falcons (8-4-1 in Colonial League) won't take the field until Thursday evening.
After losing in the quarterfinals last season to Central Catholic, the eventual Class AA boys champion, the No. 4 seeded Falcons are eager to take the field on Thursday evening when they host No. 5 seed Blue Mountain. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
Three Colonial League squads will represent the top four teams in the District 11 AA bracket. Northwestern's league title earned the Tigers the No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 seed Saucon Valley and No. 3 seed Moravian Academy.
