Schumaker reaches state golf championship

Grant Schumaker has been missing some school recently to compete in various golf events over the last few weeks.

Due to his performance last week, he had to miss two more days of school this week.

On October 15, Schumaker carded a 73 at the PIAA East Regional, held at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood. The senior's score placed him in a tie for tenth and qualified him for the state tournament as the top 24 Class AAA boys golfers qualify.

"It was definitely a lot easier," Schumaker said of playing at the regional in comparison to districts. "There were perfect conditions and not much wind. You could go right at the flag and not have to worry about the wind."

Schumaker's one-over-par score included one birdie and two bogeys. He missed only two fairways and two greens the entire round.

"By far ball striking was the best for me today," he said. "With keeping it in the fairway and on the greens, my ball striking was big. It was by far the best part for me."

A fellow Green Hornet who didn't have as much luck with her game at the East Regional was District 11 girls champion Kelsey Patterson.

Patterson shot a 91 and finished 22nd. The top 12 girls advance.

Patterson finished 16th in last year's regional and when asked what went wrong she simply stated, "Everything."

Sam Fritzinger also competed at the East Regional tournament. She placed third at districts earlier this month. The freshman finished her regional round with a score of 88 and tied for 17th.

"I now see how I am doing compared to everyone else," she said. "I see what I need to do to improve and work at in the offseason in preparation for next season."

Schumaker and Patterson were all apart of Emmaus' team district title along with Carlos Fullerton, Mike Lessel and Max Harrington. Those five took on the District 12 champion in a PIAA subregional match last Saturday in which the victor advanced to the state tournament. The Green Hornets traveled to Huntingdon Valley Country Club and took on LaSalle College Prep, losing 304-317.

Fullerton provided the lowest score for Emmaus with an even-par 70. Schumaker posted a 75 while Lessel and Patterson both finished with an 86. Harrington carded a 90.

Although the season has concluded for Patterson, Fritzinger and the rest of the Green Hornets, Schumaker moved on to this week's state championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York, teeing off at 8:50 a.m. on Monday, for day one of the two-day, 36-hole tournament.

Schumaker took a simple mindset into the state tournament.

"I just want to finish the best I possibly can and maybe even win," he said. "If I can win, that would be amazing."

A win would make missing those extra two days of school well worth it.
