Girls soccer falls in conference semifinal
NAZARETH It may have only taken the Emmaus girls soccer team 55 seconds to get things going in the Lehigh Valley Conference tournament semifinals against Parkland.
It was a matter of seconds though in the second half that may have told the story for the Green Hornets in a 3-2 setback to the Trojans.
The Hornets led the game on two seperate occassions, but the tournament's No. 3 seed was unable to hold onto the lead. Emmaus surrendered the lead when Parkland's Rachel Medlar scored with 16:18 left in the game.
"Yeah, we got off to a good start," Emmaus head coach Rob Rooney said. "But we have not really closed games well this year. We have been up and down all year long. Tonight was a perfect example. We were up and down in the same game.
"It's disappointing I think for the girls that we led this game twice and at the end of the game we're not the team on top on the scoreboard. It's a lesson learned."
It took 55 seconds for the Green Hornets' Megan Snyder to post the game's first goal off an assist from teammate Shannon McGinnis.
Nearly 10 minutes later the Trojans' Kayla Haberbosch answered with a header off a Carly Shaffer send in that developed off a corner.
In the second half, Snyder found the back of the Parkland net with her second goal of the game. This time Amanda McCarthy sent a perfect pass and Snyder finished it off with only 2:03 ticked off the second-half clock.
"Megan had a great night tonight," Rooney said. "She's a player who started games for us here and there. She's been in and out of the lineup as a starter.
"She was opportunistic. She was tough and up to the task. She had a great night. She certainly did her part."
The Trojans' Shay Edwards knotted the game for a second time with 19:04 left in the game. Edwards collected a pass that sailed just over the head of a Green Hornet defender and finished the ball off past the Hornets' keeper Kay Gustafson to make it 2-2.
Medlar scored the game-winning goal just minutes later.
Emmaus moved on to this week's District 11 Class 3A playoff, hosting Whitehall on Tuesday. (The game was played after Press deadline. See next week for coverage).
"We'll be ready to play," said Rooney, whose team seeks its ninth district title. "We've got a week to prepare. I continue to believe that we're just as talented as anybody else.
"We are 1-1 with Parkland, a team that is likely going to be a top-two seed, maybe third or fourth. We beat them the first time. We led [the LVC semfinal] game the most of the way. We never trailed till the final goal was scored and that's unfortunate. We will be ready to play come district playoff time."
