LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Football falls to Whitehall

During Emmaus's five-game winning streak all three units played well enough to do their job and capture the victory.

The same can't be said about last Friday night's game.

Whitehall (6-1 in LVC; 7-1 overall) defeated Emmaus (5-2; 5-3) on homecoming at Zephyr Stadium last Friday, 19-7, as the Zephyrs snapped the Hornet winning streak and severely damaged Emmaus' Lehigh Valley Conference title hopes in the process.

The Zephyrs took advantage of Emmaus' miscues and lack of parity between their units early on as Whitehall's Tyler Williams blocked an Andrew Davidson punt midway through the first quarter. Five plays later the Zephs score a touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Jeff Charles to Saquon Barkley, that put the Zephyrs up 6-0 with 6:38 left in the first quarter.

Two drives later, with Whitehall knocking on Emmaus' doorstep, the Green Hornet defense, the star of the three units of the night, forced a fumble on their 1-yard line that was recovered by Dan Velasco to save a potential score. Early in the second, Whitehall was driving, but failed to convert on a fourth and two as Barkley was stopped a yard short at Emmaus' 18-yard line.

On the ensuing drive Emmaus traveled most of the field, reaching Whitehall's 24 before Logan Kober threw an interception on a tipped ball. Kober finished the night going 11-for-22 for 93 yards with four interceptions.

With both teams failing to score before half, Whitehall took its 6-0 lead in halftime.

Kyle Boney (10 carries, 33 yards) was the leading rusher for Emmaus.

"Offensively, we made a lot of mistakes up front," said Emmaus head coach Rany Cuthbert. "We missed blocks and didn't stay on them. For as well as we have played up front this year, I don't think we played that well tonight. That is disappointing. We had some good plays, but we kept shooting ourselves in the foot. You win as a team and lose as a team, and tonight we lost as a team."

On the flip side, defensively Emmaus played well as it bottled up Barkley, the leading rusher in the LVC, and only allowed him 61 yards on 18 carries and 21 yards on two receptions. However, Barkley scored all three of Whitehall's touchdowns one rushing, one receiving and one on an interception return.

Emmaus received the ball to start the second half, but went three and out and gave Whitehall great field position as it started at the Emmaus 37. It only took 2:23 for Barkley to punch it in from a yard out to make it 13-0 with 7:21 left in the fourth.

Later in the third, Kober threw another interception, which was returned 60 yards by Barkley for a touchdown to make it 19-0 Whitehall with 2:35 remaining in the third quarter.

Midway through the fourth Emmaus' Kyzir White intercepted a Charles' pass and returned it 48 yards for the only Green Hornet score on the night. A Hunter Kushy extra point made it 19-7 Whitehall with 3:41 left in the contest.

With Whitehall's defense controlling Boney and Davidson (five carries, nine yards), White stepped up and caught six passes for 79 yards.

"It feels good," White said about producing offensively. "I know my skills and I know what I can do. I know that I didn't get the chance to do it earlier in the year as we had success running the ball. I do what I can to help the team."

Another Kober pass intercepted by Whitehall's Ryan Bonshak sealed the game for the Zephyrs.

The Hornets accumulated seven penalties for 55 yards and that hindered their chances of winning. Being without top running back Wyl Miller also hurt Emmaus' running game against Whitehall.

"It is hard to win when you don't score points," said Cuthbert. "We obviously missed Wyl, but that is no excuse. I don't think we played our best game. We had a lot of mistakes. We had a lot of penalties and you aren't going to beat good teams when you do that. That is the bottom line. We need to regroup and get better at the things we do."
