Long places 10th at district golf
Despite being a bit nervous heading into last week's District 11 Golf Championships at Blue Ridge Country Club's par 72 course, Salisbury's Kody Long still had high expectations of himself.
Unfortunately, severe weather conditions during play on Monday had postponed the remainder of the tournament until Tuesday. And perhaps it was the effects of the heavy rain and gusty winds that put Long in a situation on Monday that ultimately hurt his goal of advancing to regionals.
Compared to an even-par score in his final six holes on Tuesday morning, Long shot a 15-over par through 12 holes on Monday. He finished in 10th place, but his score of 87 was four strokes behind the sixth-place finisher and final regional-qualifier Tim Wolak of Moravian Academy.
"Going out [Tuesday] compared to [Monday] was a lot different," Long said. "The wind completely played tricks with your ball. I couldn't tell where it was going to go or how to control my ball.
"When I started the tournament, I really just wanted to qualify for regionals. That didn't happen so it's a little disappointing how it ended."
Like much of the field, the strong winds on Monday certainly were a factor in Long's performance. His play on Tuesday was almost as night and die as the weather over the course of the 24 hours.
He had a number of bogeys on Monday, but remained in control on the course during his final six holes on Tuesday to secure a birdie and an eagle.
"I think I played pretty well," Long said. "If I would've played a little bit better [Monday], I would've been able to place a little bit better than I did."
It was a solid all-around effort from Long on Tuesday that kept him in competition with the top of the pack.
"[Tuesday], everything was working well," Long said. "There was no real weak point or strong point."
Despite coming up short of his personal goal, Long's performance in his first time at districts was certainly impressive.
Long improved on his district-qualifying score of 91 at Mahoning Valley Country Club on September 30.
"I was pretty nervous [at districts]," Long said. "It was my first time in districts, so it was a new experience that I got to encounter. I'll take from what I learned this year, and take it to next year."
Northwestern Lehigh's Cole Miller outlasted Tamaqua's Michael Weinert in a one-hole playoff to win the Class AA boys tournament with a score of 73.
On the girls Class AA side, Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado finished in first place with an 83. Central Catholic also won the AA team championships.
In AAA, Emmaus won the team championships, and had first-place finishers in both the boys and girls tournaments. Grant Schumaker defeated Parkland's Chad Hess on the second hole of a playoff to win with a score of 75. Kelsey Patterson scored an 84 to grab the girls championship.
The top six boys and top three girls in each class move on to this week's PIAA East Regional Tornament at Golden Oaks Golf Course in Fleetwood.
