Hurricanes fall on homecoming

The Emmaus football team is enjoying a five-game winning streak after starting the season 0-2.

During this streak Andrew Davidson is enjoying a successful stretch of his own.

The junior tailback scored two touchdowns last Friday night, making it his fifth consecutive game with at least one rushing touchdown, as Emmaus (5-1 LVC, 5-2 overall) defeated Liberty (2-4, 3-4) at East Penn School District Stadium 29-7 on homecoming.

Even in the wet conditions, as Mother Nature arrived uninvited to homecoming, the 6-foot-1 Davidson (13 carries, 67 yards) kept the scoring streak alive as he has notched one in every Green Hornet victory this season and he is happy to be helping out.

"Coach [Randy] Cuthbert obviously is a great coach and he loves power running," said Davidson. "I fit the bill perfectly I guess. It feels great to be able to go out and do that for him and get it in the end zone."

Liberty made only one trip to the end zone and that was on its first play from scrimmage, an 88-yard pass from Doug Erney to KJ Williams resulted in a 7-0 lead.

The tide quickly turned as Emmaus shut down Williams (two catches, 111 yards) and scored 29 unanswered points to remain tied at the top of the Lehigh Valley Conference.

After a 28-yard field goal attempt by Hunter Kushy flew wide and a Logan Kober pass was intercepted by Williams, the Green Hornets scored the next five times they touched the pigskin.

The first score came off a botched hold by Liberty on a field goal attempt that was scooped up by Kyle Boney and returned 76 yards for a touchdown. The second came soon after as Liberty couldn't handle the snap on a punt in their own end zone, but it was corralled in time for Davidson and Boney to down the punter for a safety and a 9-7 lead with 1:41 left in the first half.

Getting the ball back after the safety and starting at midfield Kober rushed three times for 20 yards on the eight-play drive that left Emmaus with a fourth and 11 on Liberty's 24-yard line. Electing to go for it, Kober found senior tight end Noah Bertram down the middle of the field for the touchdown, the first passing score for Kober this season. As the homecoming court entered the field, Emmaus was leading 16-7.

"The first play was obviously a momentum turn for them," said Cuthbert. "But we were able to string a few things together late in the half. The first half we were moving the ball. We didn't get the field goal and we didn't convert in the red zone, so I think we could have had more points in the first half. These guys were tough though and they are getting resilient.

Late in the first quarter Wyl Miller left the game after taking a serious hit and never returned. He was seen wearing street clothes during the second half of the game.

Miller's absence opened up the door for Boney in the backfield. He was Emmaus' rusher for the night with 12 carries for 82 yards.

"It felt really good," Boney said. "I still owe everything to my offensive line. They opened up all the holes for me and I just went through them. I owe it all to my offensive line."

To open the second half, Chris Schiermeyer stripped Iziah Avent on Emmaus's 24-yard line and returned it to Liberty's seven-yard line. Two plays later Davidson scored his first rushing touchdown, a six-yard run. His second score came on the next drive as he punched it in from a yard out.

"We have a pretty big list of plays coming out of the 'Rhino Package,'" said Cuthbert. "Andy is a special athlete no doubt. He never really played offense and we just threw him in there.

"He is a natural and we are going to continue to use that."

Davidson is part of the plan for the future as every game in which he has scored, Emmaus has won.
