Grant Schumaker's list of accomplishments on the golf course is longer than your average grocery list. And it just got longer.
The Emmaus High School senior can now a District 11 AAA Championship to his resume.
Last Tuesday afternoon Schumaker donned the district gold medal after beating Parkland's Chad Hess on their second playoff hole at Blue Ridge Country Club in Palmerton.
The tournament started Monday morning under what was a gloomy sky, but the rain held off until the lead group in AAA, which included Schumaker and Hess, completed 11 holes. Play was suspended until Tuesday morning when Schumaker finished out his round of 75 that included two birdies, three bogeys and one double-bogey.
"I've played a lot of tournaments where it was nasty out for part of it and then got nice," he said. "I played one tournament where we had to stop three different times because of the weather. It's not like it was completely unusual for me."
Another facet that wasn't unusual for Schumaker was having to play sudden-death playoff golf. Just ten days prior Schumaker became the youngest champion of the Lehigh Valley Amateur by defeating Northampton's Tyler Smith in 19 holes at Green Pond Country Club.
The future Robert Morris University golfer stepped up to the 10th tee alongside Hess with determination on his face.
"I was telling myself to hit a good tee shot and make a birdie," Schumaker said. "I wanted to do that because I knew he probably would get a birdie [as well]."
Both players sank birdie putts to extend the playoff to the 12th hole.
Both golfers blasted tee shots to the middle of the fairway. After the wedge shots, Hess was lining up a 15-foot putt for birdie while Schumaker was looking at a 10-footer for his birdie. Hess was first to play and rolled his putt past the hole. Schumaker capitalized by dropping his birdie putt, giving a little fist pump as the ball descended into the cup.
"I knew it was going to be a tough battle," Schumaker said. "To be able to birdie the first two holes of the playoff was just awesome."
Emmaus also saw two of its girls players move on to regionals. (See accompanying story)
Kelsey Patterson won the girls title, while Sam Fritzinger took third place.
Emmaus also captured the District 11 Class AAA team title with a score of 324 just one year after losing the title to Northampton by one shot.
In addition to Schumaker and Patterson, Max Harrington (82), Mike Lessel (83) and Carlos Fullerton (90) all contributed to the team championship. The team was scheduled to play a subregional match this week which will determine if it goes on to states.
"This was one of our goals from the beginning," said Emmaus head coach Mike Mihalik. "This was the title that we really wanted since we lost out on it last year.
"It feels really good to get that team district title. Plus these seniors really deserve something. They have a 45-3 record in four years and they now have a district championship to show for it."
Mihalik said that the only way to make the day better would have been to have another boy qualify, but he was ecstatic about his three taking the trip to Fleetwood.
"For Grant, this is what he has been working for," Mihalik said.
"I want to see him move on and get a chance to go to states. Also, the same thing for Kelsey as she has been in regionals the last two years. I hope it will be a big day for all three of them."
