The Emmaus boys soccer team stretched its win streak to six straight with a 3-1 win over Council Rock North Saturday. The team stands at 12-3-1 overall and 11-1-0 in the Lehigh Valley Conference as the season winds down and it prepares for the LVC playoffs that begin next Tuesday.
In the time leading up to the playoffs, coach John Cari has a short to do list for his team, but knows that there is still some work to be done.
"We need to sharpen up some things going into the playoffs," said Cari. "We are running a pretty good streak of wins, which is a positive, and good teams find a way to win. We just need to sharpen up and that's our focus now."
Hopefully, one thing that will happen is for senior Kevin Waterman to get healthy before the playoffs, so he can contribute at 100 percent. Waterman has been battling some illness, but has continued to play and contribute as much as possible.
"Kevin's a good player," said Cari. "He's been a varsity player since his sophomore year. He's been pretty sick lately, so he's just trying to get himself back into the groove."
For his part, Waterman believes he'll be OK for the playoffs and that the rest of the team should be in pretty good shape for the postseason. Like his coach, Waterman believes that while the team is playing well, it could be even better.
"We're playing pretty well, but there are a couple lapses," Waterman said. "We had a lapse [against Council Rock North] and they were able to score and we gave up a goal to Northampton with two seconds left in the half, so I don't think we've really put together a full 80 minutes and I think we're capable of doing that in the playoffs."
Waterman, a senior, hasn't decided on a school yet, but hopes to run track and field in college and major in political science.
