LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Liberty visits EPSD for homecoming

Senior year of high school is full of memorable moments and special occasions. One of those events is homecoming.

For the 22 senior Green Hornet football players, it comes this Friday night.

Emmaus (4-1, 4-2) hosts Liberty (2-3, 3-3) at 7 p.m. Friday evening and those seniors will all be looking for a homecoming win.

The homecoming dance usually is held on Saturday night. The Green Hornets will be doing a bit of a dance Friday night during the game to keep up with the Hurricanes.

"They are really good," head coach Randy Cuthbert said of Liberty. "They have a lot of speed and they hurt you a lot of different ways. It is going to be a challenge and a great game. We are looking for another opportunity to show that we belong. You have to earn your respect and we are looking to do that this week."

Cuthbert and his team will have to stop some of the more explosive and skilled players in the Lehigh Valley Conference such as receiver/defensive back KJ Williams, who is a menace on both sides of the ball. Also, Darius Jones and Doug Erney will be big factors for Liberty offensively.

Erney is a sophomore quaterback who won the starting job this season. He has thrown seven touchdowns and four interceptions through the first half of half of the season.

The Hurricanes beat Central Catholic last week, 35-14.

With Emmaus' winning streak at four games, the team has shown that it knows how to win football games. Cuthbert says that on top of football skills, intangibles have been accumulated as well through these last few weeks.

"We had opportunities to finish games earlier this year and we didn't," he said. "You have to be able to finish off games when you play good teams in a tough schedule every week. I'm proud of the kids for doing this, but we have to continue it every week."

Emmaus' win kept them tied at the top of the LVC heading in to this week. Parkland (4-1, 5-1) visits Freedom and Easton (4-1, 5-1) hosts Northampton.

Matching up against a vertical team like Liberty will require tremendous play from Emmaus's secondary. The defensive backfield is led by senior Kyzir White, who has been great thus far this season.

Emmaus may try to turn this in to a physical game with the play of Sal Pagano and Andrew Davidson, which may give them an edge and a victory in the LVC matchup.
