Emmaus field hockey remains undefeated
When the field hockey season started, you could pretty much figure that the road to the Lehigh Valley Conference championship would have to run through Memorial Field and things are playing out just as predicted.
At 15-0 overall and 12-0 in the LVC, Emmaus is again at the top of the standings as it prepares for next week's LVC tournament and beyond. While a recent 9-2 win over Northampton was good, coach Sue Butz-Stavin believes the Konkrete Kids exposed some things that need to be fixed.
"Defensively, there are some things that we need to do a little bit better in our containment and in our tackling," she said.
"Our offense really made a statement tonight [against Northampton]. We're a good offensive team and a good midfield team, but at times, we can get a little sloppy and they took advantage of it."
The team has some tough challenges before it hits the playoffs, but Butz-Stavin believes that those games will help to prepare the Hornets for districts and hopefully, the PIAA playoffs.
She's looking forward to the challenges that they face prior to the LVC playoffs.
"That's why when we have our four nonconference games that we try to get teams that challenge us to prepare us," said Butz-Stavin. "If we don't do something defensively to contain them, they'll make something happen, but it's our core defense that I'm really worried about."
Senior Ashley Moxey recently scored a career-high four goals in a win over Liberty where Butz-Stavin collected her 800th career win, giving Moxey a highlight to look back on.
"I didn't expect it, to be honest," Moxey said. "I've never scored that many goals in one game, so it surprised me, but I was happy."
Moxey also believes that the undefeated team can be even better and is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.
"I think there's always room for improvement," she said.
"We're working really hard and I think that's showing from the games that we've played, but there are still things we can work on to finish up the season."
Moxey has committed to Division 3 Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee and wants to study pre-med.
