EHS girls volleyball sweeps Allen, prepares for postseason
After Monday's win over Allen the Emmaus girls volleyball team moved one win away from clinching a spot in the Lehigh Valley Conference playoffs. The Green Hornets got a three game sweep over the Canaries, 25-8, 25-4, 25-7 at Emmaus High School.
Emmaus (13-1 overall, 11-1 LVC) reached the conference finals a year ago, and is in prime position to reach the league's final four tournament, needing a victory against Dieruff on Wednesday or Central Catholic Thursday. The Green Hornets and Parkland are seemingly locked as the top two seeds for the league playoffs.
"This season has really been a joy to be a part of," said head coach Gwen Millets. "It's easy when you have girls that get along and play well together and work together as a team, it's easy being a coach. When you put all of that together, you've got a really good combination. We stress teamwork all the time."
Emmaus played an all-around team game in defeating Allen. Millets was able to mix and match to get different players into games.
There was never much trouble in the three-game set. Allie Traynor's 15 kills and 13 kills from Corinne Justus fueled a balanced attack. The Canaries were never in striking distance, as they trailed by double digits consistently over the three games.
"These kids get it," said Millets. "My seniors have been through those years where we just talk about being a team and working together. They said now we're going to go do it. That's the culmination of everything and why we're so successful, because they get it and they're putting it into practice."
After the lone loss to Parkland, Emmaus has rattled off five straight match wins without losing a game. With two matches remaining, the Green Hornets are looking to stay hot heading into the postseason.
"Nothing is perfect, and the girls played well tonight, but there's always things you can work on," said Millets. "We just want to fine tune some things so we can play with the teams in LVC's and districts."
Mackenzie O'Brien tallied 10 kills and 9 digs, Sydney Pickering added 8 digs, and Rebecca Houghton contributed 35 assists, 6 digs and 3 service aces for the Green Hornets.
The Lehigh Valley Conference semifinals are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 14 with finals on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
