Falcons knock off unbeaten SV
There was no question how badly the Salisbury boys soccer team wanted to win Saturday's contest against Saucon Valley.
Following a 2-0 loss to Moravian Academy last Wednesday, the Falcons had a chance to respond against the league's lone remaining unbeaten team.
And they responded in a huge way.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first five minutes of play, the Falcons scored two consecutive goals, including Danny Walters' game-winner with 23:47 to play, to give them the 2-1 victory over the Panthers at Saucon Valley High School.
"We just came off a tough loss at Moravian that we really wanted to win," Walters said. "We lost in the dying moments of the game. To come out here and beat an undefeated team, the team who's the favorite in the league, it's great to have that pushing into the end of the season."
"Everybody wants to knock off the team that's undefeated," Salisbury's Connor Wagner said. "We just had the better team today."
Off a deep free kick by Wagner, Walters and Austin Uhl both got behind the Panthers' defense. Despite a collision between Walters and Uhl, Walters was able to direct Wagner's pass just enough into the back of the net to put the Falcons ahead. It was his ninth goal of the season.
"All that was on my mind was to get a foot on it," Walters said. "I never even saw Austin [Uhl] coming in. We both got in there and got a touch. It happed to go in, so I'll take it."
While the offense responded with two goals, it was the Falcons' defense that had just as big of a hand in the victory.
Shaun Holben tallied eight saves in goal, and other than that early Panther strike, the defense rose to the occasion from that point on. The Panthers had 10 shots on goal, but just one score.
"Usually when we get scored on first, we don't really take it that bad," Wagner said. "We came back hard and strong in the first and second half, and just finished the game off."
The Falcons first got on the board midway through the third quarter. A left-footed strike by Walters was saved, but Wagner cleaned up the loose ball in front of the net to tie it up. It was Wagner's 14th goal of the season.
The win also helps the Falcons' chances at making the Colonial League tournament. The Falcons, who moved to 7-3 in conference play after the win, have three regular season games remaining, including a pivotal match at Southern Lehigh on Tuesday.
"We needed this win," said Wagner. "I think we needed it to get into leagues also. It's a big win after a loss to Moravian the other day."
Results from Tuesday's game were not available at press time. The Falcons will travel to Notre Dame (Green Pond) on Monday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
