A week ago, Emmaus senior Katrina Guido couldn't have imagined how her run in the 2013 Lehigh Valley Conference Tennis Tournament would play out.

Her doubles partner during the regular season, Elise Van Orner, was held out of the tournament for health reasons that occurred during the team's match on Friday. Two days later, Guido found out she would pair up with junior Amy Yang as the Hornets' No. 2 doubles team in the league tournament.

The two had never played together.

Despite not having experience with one another, Guido and Yang won their first three matches en route to the finals against Parkland's Colleen Wylie and Rachel Wong. Although they came up short against the Trojans, 10-3, Guido and Yang earned silver medals in Monday's tournament at Parkland High School.

"Last year I came in fourth place [in singles]," Guido said. "The first thing I said when I got on the bus to Amy this morning was, 'I'm a senior. I want a medal.' We showed up today, and we said let's go for it."

Guido and Van Orner combined to go 9-2 in the regular season.

Guido and Yang, the tournament's No. 6 seed in the No. 2 doubles bracket, started the day with a victory over Liberty's Abby Frankenfiel and Katie Kametz.

The duo then defeated No. 3 seeded Elizabeth McCarthy and Marissa Mele from Freedom, 7-5, and took down Nazareth's No. 2 seed duo of Megan Parsons and Natalie Bono, 10-9, to advance to the finals.

"[We were] just relying on our net game," Guido said. "[We were] getting our good serves in and placing shots."

All three Hornet singles players medaled in the tournament as well.

No. 1 singles player Kelly Nguyen earned a third-place finish after defeating Freedom's Flannery Johnston, 10-6. She also defeated Bethlehem Catholic's Taylor Treadwell in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Jenna Peng from Parkland in the semifinals.

"Honestly, I was just aiming for a medal for my senior year," Nguyen said. "I knew Jenna [Peng] would be a tough one to beat."

Nguyen lost to Johnston in the regular season, 6-2, 6-0.

"I've played with these girls since freshman year," Nguyen said. "I used to take clinics with pretty much everyone here."

Catherine Garrity, a No. 3 seed in the No. 2 singles bracket, took home third place with a 10-2 win over Central's Sabrina Elward, while No. 2 seed Victoria Chan captured bronze in the No. 3 singles bracket.

Michelle Gunn and Anna Thoet defeated Bethlehem Catholic's Sam Macalusa and Tori Evert in the first round of the No. 3 doubles bracket. The duo then fell to Parkland's Shelby Knafo and Emily Hanson. Caroline Smith and Kennedy Spencer fell in the first round of the No. 4 doubles bracket.

The Trojans added their seventh consecutive LVC title after earning first place finishes in every bracket.
