LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Coach reaches another milestone

What was one of the most dominating weeks for Emmaus field hockey wrapped up Monday night with coach Sue Butz-Stavin getting her 800th career win in a 12-0 romp over Freedom. Senior Ashley Moxey and freshman Meredith Sholder each scored four times in the win over Freedom.

The historic win came on the heels of a 2-1 win over powerful Penn Manor on Saturday night, a good 10-0 win over Bethlehem Catholic and an impressive 8-0 win over Liberty to start the week, which Butz-Stavin called the team's most dominating win of the season.

The wins over Penn Manor and Liberty were especially satisfying. Liberty snapped Emmaus unbeaten streak in the Lehigh Valley Conference that stretched for nearly a decade when they downed the Lady Hornets last season. Emmaus has started a new streak and left no doubt about wanting a little revenge against Liberty when they beat the Hurricanes 8-0.

"I think that was our motivation," said senior Krissy Mikelson. "We were coming out as that game was the past and let's look at this game as a new beginning and show them that we're not going to let that happen again."

The win over Penn Manor was also important because the Hornets came into that game ranked 11th in the country by Top of the Circle and Penn Manor was ranked ninth. The 2-1 win should change those rankings.

This year's Emmaus team has outscored its opponents by a combined total of 79-2 and under Butz-Stavin, they've outscored their opponents by a mark of 4,031-380.

For Butz-Stavin, the 800th win brought with it a time to reflect on her career at Emmaus.

"I can remember my first practice," said Butz-Stavin. "I can remember winning my first game on September 8 of '76. We played Dieruff and I think it was a 2-0 game, so it's been wonderful. I've had some wonderful coaching staffs and I couldn't have done it without the athletes and their dedication and the parental support that we've gotten through the program and I've been very fortunate and blessed that the district has been also very supportive of field hockey. You surround yourself with good people and good things happen."

Butz-Stavin, whose team is now 12-0 on the season, is the winningest coach in Pennsylvania high school field hockey history and is currently second in the United States, behind Nancy Williams of Shore Regional High School in New Jersey. Williams currently has 820 wins and a winning percentage of .898, while Butz-Stavin has a record of 800-76-34 for a winning percentage of .897 with Emmaus.

"You look back and see that this is the 1,107th game in Emmaus history and we have won a huge percentage of those games. I also have to thank Ginny Huber [Emmaus' first field hockey coach] for what she started here at Emmaus. She's no longer with us, but she started a great tradition and in honor of that, I just wanted to make sure that we kept moving in that direction," said Butz-Stavin.

With 800 wins under her belt, Butz-Stavin isn't worrying about any milestones that may come down the road, but she's also not thinking about calling it a career in the immediate future.

"I think I'll continue as long as I keep enjoying what I'm doing and I've got great family support and a great husband that day-in and day-out has been with the program," she said. "Will I be here for the next five or 10 years? I really couldn't tell you. I really don't know."

After the game, Butz-Stavin walked across Memorial Field with her husband to a waiting crowd of family and friends who applauded her career achievement and waited to celebrate with the coach.
