Following a regular season team championship for the Emmaus golf team, the Hornets were looking to add yet another team championship to the trophy case, this time from Monday's 2013 LVC Golf Championships held at Bethlehem Golf Club.

And despite three Hornets (Grant Schumaker, Carlos Fullerton and Max Harrington) all with top-10 finishes, Emmaus finished just strokes behind Parkland in a tiebreaker, which took each team's sixth golfer, after both teams scored a 389 on the day.

Schumaker, last season's league champion, had his eyes set on a repeat performance on Monday. But a slow start on the front nine put Schumaker behind just enough that he wasn't able to fully recover.

His three-over-par round of 74 was good for second place on the day, but came up just one stroke behind Parkland's Chad Hess, whose 73 won the tournament.

"In the beginning of the round, I was hitting a lot of greens and just getting a lot of two-putts," Schumaker said. "At the end of the round, I was making good putts for birdies. I made three birdies in the last couple of holes.

"I really started off bad. I missed a lot of puts inside of five feet."

After a steady outing throughout the front nine holes, losing three strokes to par on holes 11 and 12 was ultimately a deciding factor on his finish.

"I was 2-over in the front nine, and then on 11 and 12 I [went bogey-double bogey]," Schumaker said. "Then I went 2-under on the last five holes, so I finished strong."

"I thought one- or two-under was going to win it, but it was really hard today. The pins were really tough today. If I would've shot even or one-over, I would've been pleased with it."

Fullerton finished in third place with a round of 75, one over his average on the season, and Max Harrington came in ninth with a score of 77. Harrington's average coming into play was 82 on the season.

Kelsey Patterson shot an 83 on the day and captured third place for the girls. Freedom's Helen Hsu finished in first with a round of 77 and Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado shot an 80, good for a second-place finish.

Emmaus' Mike Lessel shot an 80 and Kevin Caverly finished with a 92. Sam Fritzinger tallied an 89 in the girls tournament.

The Hornets will represent the LVC when districts begin. They are one of four teams that qualified to compete for the district team title on October 7, at Blue Ridge Country Club. Parkland will likely be in that field as well.

Next Monday, September 30, all nonexempt players whose average for the season meets the qualifying standard will tee it up in the District 11 Championship qualifier at Mahoning Valley Country Club. Individuals who advance through that event will move on to the championship tournament at Blue Ridge Country Club, where team and individual titles are on the line.

"In district qualifiers, I'm just trying to do the best I can and trying to definitely make it," Schumaker said. "Hopefully districts will be good for me."
