LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Hornet football faces tough task

The last two weeks, like every week, the goal of the Emmaus football team was to come out victorious.

The goal this week is to contain Easton's Shane Simpson. Head coach Randy Cuthbert believes that will translate to a win.

"They have a great running back [in Simpson] and we need to stop him," said Cuthbert. "We need to worry about the line up front as well. It is definitely going to be a challenge. We need to get off to an early start. I think if we execute and get some points going our confidence will grow."

Emmaus' confidence is the highest it has been this season as the Hornets are coming off a win last Friday night against Freedom that pushed their winning streak to two games. This Friday night the Hornets (2-2, 2-1) welcome the Lehigh Valley Conference co-leaders to East Penn School District Stadium at 7pm.

Easton (4-0, 3-0) is coming off a 34-14 victory against Allentown Central Catholic in week three. That high-scoring affair is the norm for the Red Rovers as they average 36 points per game so far this season. Cuthbert says that the time of possession battle will be key as he hopes his offense can help out the defense and keep them rested throughout the game.

Another important facet to this game will be the battle in the trenches and Cuthbert hopes his linemen rise to the occasion this week.

"Our line is important this week," he said. "[Easton is] tough when they run the ball and they have a good defense as well. So our defense being able to block their front and being able to react is going to be the challenge."

Cuthbert is looking for the usual suspects on offense such as Logan Kober, Wyl Miller and Kyzir White to attack Easton's defense, which is a little different than what they have seen in recent weeks as the Red Rovers run a 4-3 scheme with a 4-4 mixed in.

"We have to stay focused and we need to execute," Cuthbert said. "Whenever you have an opportunity like this with Easton coming to our place and being ranked highly, this is an opportunity to get some recognition. This is where you can take advantage."

Cuthbert knows this game will be a tough one and Easton is the best team his Hornets have lined up against this season.

"We will need to play our best game yet," he said.
