Koehler looks to turn it around

Kurt Koehler is all about soccer.

Since he began playing the sport at the age of six, Koehler has had an admitted love affair with the sport.

In fact, he plans to continue being associated with his passion when he graduates from Whitehall in June.

Until then, Koehler plans to help his club rebound from a 2-5 start and get back to districts.

"We're off to rough start," said Koehler. "To be honest, we should have a better record. But we have been coming around more as a team and we're getting better team chemistry. We seniors know we have to start to pick it up."

Head coach Gus Garcia has been pleased with Koehler's contributions through the years.

"He has been playing really well," said Garcia about Koehler, who has been playing varsity since his junior year. "He recently received our Man of the Match Award and he has been very solid on what he had been doing.

"He has really developed as a player and is on track for a good finish."

Since he began playing at the age of six, Koehler also played baseball until the age of 13. He is the lone soccer player in his family, the son of Kirk and Kristen Koehler.

His father played football at Dieruff and his mother played volleyball at Allen.

Setting his sights on playing high school soccer, Koehler needed to make some initial adjustments.

"Ever since I was little, I wanted to play in high school," stated Koehler. "At first, the game was faster and the players were bigger. I knew I had to make some changes.

It wasn't until my junior year that I really felt comfortable with everything. I was double-rostered my sophomore year.In my junior year, I finally played as much as I could."

After Whitehall, Koehler plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy, a field he discovered while in a class. But he doesn't want to relinquish his hold on soccer.

"I did some research on the topic and found out it would be a good fit for me," said Koehler. "I would also like to play soccer in college if possible. I would also think about possibly coaching soccer someday. "But I knew we have to get our team back on track first." With his love for the game, Koehler will certainly try his best.
