Hornets get season's first win

It was a special night this past Saturday at J. Birney Crum stadium for the Emmaus Green Hornets football team. It was junior Logan Kober's first game as the varsity starting quarterback.

Fortunately for Emmaus, it turned out to be Kober's first victory as the varsity starting quarterback as well.

Emmaus (1-2, 1-1) defeated Allentown Central Catholic (1-2, 0-2) by a score of 21-14 on what was a chilly Saturday night to earn its first victory of 2013.

Leading the way for the Green Hornets was Kober, who was 9-for-15 passing with 103 yards and an interception that occurred right before halftime. He also had 18 rushing yards on eight carries.

"I was a little nervous, but not as nervous as I thought I would be," Kober said. "I played last week as well. I played football my whole life, so it was nothing different for me. We all came out here and contributed. We didn't make as many mistakes as we did the last two games and we deserved to win this. It feels great to be in this position to win at the end."

Kober's shining moment of the contest came near its conclusion as the 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior led the Green Hornets on a 76-yard drive that originated with 3:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. The drive lasted 3:16 and resulted in a Kober 7-yard scamper into the end zone to put the Green Hornets ahead 21-14.

"It was a roll-out left and I was looking for Wyl [Miller] in the flat, but I didn't see anyone there," Kober said.

"I then saw a huge hole in the middle. I thought to myself that I scored rushing touchdowns before and that no one is stopping me on my way to the end zone right now."

Miller was a big contributor on that final drive as well. He finished the game with 101 rushing yards on 16 carries with a touchdown and two receptions for 28 yards. Junior Andrew Davidson pitched in with 58 rushing yards on eight carries, one of which resulted in a touchdown late in the first quarter.

Defensively, Chris Schiermeyer was a part of seven tackles with one interception.

"If we are going to be successful, we are going to need a lot of guys to step up," said Cuthbert, who earned his first win as a Green Hornet. "Schiermeyer had some big plays on the last drive as did [Sal] Pagano.

"Logan is always going to have big plays. I think that these guys, now that they have experience, are settling down and are going to take advantage of it."

The start of the game looked like much of the Emmaus from the last two weeks. It seemed as though they attempted an onside kick to open up the game that was returned by ACC to Emmaus's 35-yard line. Later the Vikings' drive was thwarted as Davidson intercepted their pass in the end zone.

After the game Cuthbert cleared up the confusion and stated that it wasn't an onside, but just a simple mishit by the usually-reliable kicker, Hunter Kushy, who went a perfect three for three on extra point attempts.

After the first quarter Emmaus had a 7-0 lead thanks in part to Davidson's three-yard rushing touchdown with 45 seconds remaining in the first period. Central retaliated in the second quarter with a 15-yard rush by Alvin Pacheco with 1:01 left in the half, however the extra-point attempt was blocked making it 7-6 heading to half.

Emmaus started the second half with two false start penalties and finished with five penalties in the game. The Hornets' next drive was started by a fumble recovery by Pagano at midfield, but yielded nothing as a Kushy 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked. On their ensuing drive, teh Vikes had their 21-yard field goal attempt blocked as well.

After a Miller 46-yard rushing touchdown, Central scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion to knot it up at 14-14 that led to the game-winning, career establishing drive by Kober.

Asked if he is ready to be the starting quarterback of Emmaus for the future, Kober responded, "Most definitely."
