Emmaus hosts a 'big' Patriot team

Head coach Randy Cuthbert and the Emmaus football team are in uncharted waters. They are coming into a week and a game having won their previous match-up.

That win was the first of the season for Emmaus and the first for Cuthbert as a Green Hornet and he is very happy to get it out of the way.

"We lost two tough ones in the first two weeks," Cuthbert said. "But our guys worked through it and we got to win a tight one for a change and it is great."

A huge contributing factor to that victory was junior quarterback Logan Kober, who threw for 103 yards going 9-for-15 with one interception in his first varsity start at quarterback. According to Cuthbert, Kober will be the man under center this Friday night at home against Freedom and for the foreseeable future.

"I think he did well," Cuthbert said. "He did a good job leading the team and under some pressure at the end he made a lot of great plays. I think Logan earned the right to be out there and he will be our starter this week and hopefully he will continue to get comfortable and make plays."

Last week, Sal Pagano, Chris Schiermeyer and Andrew Davidson all stepped up and produced big plays on both sides of the ball. Cuthbert took notice to those three and will give them more playing time as a result this week.

Emmaus welcomes Freedom Friday night as the Patriots, who are 1-2 overall are coming off a 41-3 defeat at the hands of Whitehall last week. However, they did beat Central Catholic 14-7 the week previous.

"They are very big," Cuthbert said. "They do have some quick guys, but they don't have much speed. We are definitely smaller, but faster. Defensively, they play like a 3-5 stack and they take chances with stunts and blitzes."

Freedom's offense has some futility as it has only scored 17 points and as a team the Patriots have only put up 24 points this season. That offense will be meeting a Green Hornet defense that has given up 79 points in three weeks.

Cuthbert said it will come down to the offensive line being able to pick up those stunts and blitzes that will enable playmakers like Kyzir White, Wyl Miller and Noah Bertram to get in to space and make some plays.

Offensively, Emmaus looks to do much of the same this week as they did last week against ACC. Cuthbert is striving for a very balanced offense that mixes in the rushing attack with the passing game. He stressed that to be successful they need to be able to run the ball well.

The Green Hornets are definitely in high spirits after getting the monkey off their back last Saturday night. They will be cruising in to Friday night coming off that solid victory and Cuthbert hopes he can steer the boat towards another victory this week.
