Boys soccer is gaining momentum

The way a team wins often says more than the game's final score.

During the Salisbury boys soccer team's 3-2 victory over Allen on Saturday afternoon at Salisbury High School, it wasn't the scoreboard that was most impressive, but rather the way the Falcons were able to pull out a win.

For the first 76 minutes, the Falcons failed to ever hold a lead, and found themselves down 2-1 with just over 16 minutes remaining. But Salisbury (7-1 overall; 5-1 in Colonial League) scored two goals in the span of 58 seconds to take the lead for good, including Austin Uhl's game-winning score from Tyler Rutt with just 2:33 to play.

"They stepped over the ball," Uhl said. "He [Rutt] overlapped and crossed it right into me."

"[They're a] 3A school," said Salisbury's Connor Wagner. "Beating them is pretty big. It gets us higher in the rankings also. It feels good. We have some tough competition coming up next week, so it gives us a little drive to win."

Despite the Canaries taking a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick at the end of the first half, and leading for over 44 minutes of play, the Falcons remained poised until the final whistle.

Danny Walters' header off a Falcon corner from Brett Spencer put Salisbury on the board and tied the game 1-1 with 17:49 left in the second half.

"I think we just came out knowing that we needed to put points on the board to win the game," Walters said. "We really wanted it, and I think that really made a difference. We wanted it more and we went out and got it."

After the Canaries retook the lead a little more than a minute later on a goal by Conroy Yearde, Walter and the Falcons had yet another response. Walters' free kick from 25-yards out was on target, and Wagner got a foot on it to direct it past the Canaries' goalkeeper to tie it 2-2.

Nearly a minute later, Uhl and the Falcons were able to take their first lead.

"I saw that Connor [Wagner] was over in front of the box, and I know that if I can put it in front of him, he can do something with it," Walters said.

"It works really well, because if you shield the goalie, the goalie doesn't know where the ball is exactly," Wagner said. "You can either kick the ball, or you could just move out of the way. There's a great chance it's going to go in because you can't see the ball. We ran it a few times before, and it seemed to work out well."

With the win, the Falcons improved to 3-0 on the season in non-conference games. Their only loss of the season was a 1-0 defeat to Pen Argyl on September 7, the only time they've been shutout.

"A few games back we lost to a team we definitely I think should've beat," Walters said. "Getting a few wins in a row, and getting our momentum back is huge for later game in the season."

Tuesday's results against Palmerton were not available at time of press. The Falcons host North Division leader Northwestern Lehigh on Thursday at 7 p.m.
