Saturday's Central Catholic game could be another tight one
"It should be a good game."
That is the prediction of Emmaus's head coach, Randy Cuthbert when talking about his team's Saturday night contest against Allentown Central Catholic.
The Green Hornets' last two games didn't disappoint in entertainment value. The Central Catholic game should be much of the same as Cuthbert sees a lot of similarities between the Vikings and Bethlehem Catholic.
"They spread the field and they have good receivers, a good quarterback [Mason Kholi] and a good running back [Patrick Taylor] and they do a lot of what Becahi did on offense," Cuthbert said. "They run a very wide open offense."
Last week, Cuthbert's offense seemed ineffective for a greater part of the game despite putting up 29 points. At half, Cuthbert replaced senior quarterback Brad Foltz with sophomore Logan Kober. The first-year Hornet head coach said the starter for this week will be announced after Wednesday's practice.
Defensively, the Hornets have to worry about Kholi and Taylor, but there is also another Nosovitch coming through the ranks as Jack Nosovitch is a speedy wideout for the Vikings.
"They are just like Bethlehem Catholic, which will help us," said Cuthbert Monday night. "We have to just pay a lot of attention to their few key players and focus on stopping them."
Cuthbert is still focused on the Emmaus vs. Emmaus battle, regardless of who the opponent is this week.
"We still can't beat us," he said. "Our offense has gotten better each and every week, but we still have mental errors scattered throughout every play. It may take the offense some time to get used to it. We need to be able to run the ball effectively and when we pass it, we need to make good decisions."
Central Catholic usually runs a 3-4 defense and did that week one. However, Cuthbert said he noticed on film that they ran an even-front scheme as well last week against Freedom. The Green Hornets will be prepared to see both looks at any given time on Saturday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium.
Emmaus has skilled players on its roster, but the execution has been lacking so far and that is what Cuthbert is looking for the most this week.
"I really want execution," he said. "We had some last week, but we still are making mistakes and are having penalties at bad times. We need to avoid those and be smarter."
One player who has been executing is sophomore Sal Pagano, who capitalized on his playing time last week and according to Cuthbert earned more starting time. He will be with the starters this week at fullback.
Emmaus knows that Central Catholic isn't the powerhouse that it once was. The Hornets know they can beat this Viking team. Cuthbert is hoping for a healthy Kyzir White for a full game and execution in all aspects. And, as he promised before, another good game.
