Golf team holds winning record
As the midway point of the Colonial League golf season has passed, Salisbury sits in a very similar position on how last season ended - a team sitting around .500.
The Falcons headed into last week's match against Saucon Valley at Wedgewood Golf Course at 4-5 in conference play. But wins over the Panthers (2-8 in Colonial League), as well as a six-stroke victory against Notre Dame of Green Pond (4-8 in Colonial League) on Friday, have put the Falcons back above the .500-mark (6-5) with four matches remaining.
"The team has been fighting," said Wagner following the Saucon Valley match. "The kids keep working at it. That's all you can do. There's no magic. Golf is a tough game."
While one experienced Falcon struggled on Thursday against the Panthers, a number of golfers helped overcome a score of 94 for senior Luke Chassard and outlast Saucon Valley, 427-440.
Cody Long shot a 78, while Brendan Reichenbach (85), Evan Kulig (87), Chase Rogers (88), and Jack Bonge (89) all scored in the mid-to-high 80s for the Falcons.
Wagner is looking for a solid run to end the season from a number of his leaders.
"He's been fairly consistent," said Wagner of Chassard. "Probably not as good as he would like, but we're hoping for a strong last five matches from him.
"With five matches left, four here at home, I think they're [Reichenbach and Kulig] looking to shoot in the low 80s. And that's definitely a possibility for them."
Against the Crusaders a day later, the Falcons put together a score of 406, their lowest total of the season. Chassard responded with a 76, and Cody Long had a team-low 73. Rogers (84), Kulig (86), and Bonge (87) rounded out the top-five Falcon scorers.
One question mark coming into the season was how consistent the team would be on a daily basis. Other than the match against Southern Lehigh when the Falcons tallied a score of 415, Wagner would like to see that consistency aspect come together a bit more.
"One match we had it all together and we shot 415," said Wagner. "Other than that, we haven't been able to put five real good scores together.
"There was a stretch in the middle where it was five kids consistently scoring. But now we have other people helping out. Jack Bonge is also playing soccer, but now he's going to play the rest of the matches with us."
One advantage that will be on the Falcons' side down the stretch is the number of home matches left on the schedule. Of the remaining four matches, the final three will be played at Wedgewood, a course that the Falcons are especially familiar with.
"Hopefully we'll win three of the next five," said Wagner following Thursday's win over Saucon Valley. "That would be nice."
With Friday's victory against Notre Dame, the Falcons are looking to split the final four matches, which include matchups against Saucon Valley, Southern Lehigh, Wilson and Moravian Academy.
Results from Tuesday's match at Saucon Valley were not available at time of press. The Falcons will host Southern Lehigh on Wednesday at Wedgewood.
