Becahi comes to Emmaus this Friday
On the schedule it shows that the Emmaus Green Hornets will host Bethlehem Catholic on Friday with a 7pm kickoff.
However, according to head coach Randy Cuthbert, the Green Hornets will be competing against themselves.
"This game is more about us than it is Bethlehem Catholic," Cuthbert admitted in a phone interview Monday night. "The game itself is going to be a challenge as Becahi is a good team, but we need to better ourselves in order to win."
This is the first conference game of the 2013 season for both squads as Emmaus is coming of a crushing 33-27 overtime loss to Pennridge. Becahi beat Pocono Mountain West 28-0 last week.
Cuthbert likes the way starting quarterback Brad Foltz played against the Rams.
"Brad made some very athletic plays," said Cuthbert. "He scrambled well and he took care of the football the whole game. Some mental mistakes were made overall offensively and I think Brad is just going to get better as he gets comfortable being the guy."
Cuthbert is hoping the Foltz will keep progressing as the season goes along and he hopes that he gels well with senior Kyzir White, as the 6-foot, 2-inch, 185-pound wide receiver was playing well last week but cramped up during the second quarter of the game and never returned to the action.
Cuthbert, who serves as the offensive coordinator, would also like to see more from running back Will Miller.
"We will be doing some different things offensively," said Cuthbert. "Brad may be throwing some shorter passes this week. We would like to get Will Miller the ball in space some more and give him some running lanes to make plays for us."
Emmaus' offense will be working against the Golden Hawks, who operate a 3-3-5 defensive scheme that is similar to a stack defense. They make multiple changes and force quarterbacks to adjust with quick audibles. Cuthbert noticed on film that the Hawk defense has "aggressive and very athletic linebackers."
Defensively, Cuthbert is concerned about Becahi's quarterback (Julian Spigner) and running back (Michael McDaniel), but admits that there is speed all over the offense, particularly at the skill positions.
McDaniel rushed for 130 yards last week and scored two touchdowns.
"They have some big play guys on offense and they definitely have some speed," Cuthbert said. "They have a good young quarterback and a good running back. They are going to go down the field and make us spread it out defensively."
Cuthbert was pleased with last week's game despite coming up on the losing side of the season opener. He did say though that mental mistakes killed them and he hopes that they can be corrected. If Emmaus beats Emmaus, then the Green Hornets will have a tough time taking down the Golden Hawks.
