Be sure to come out and celebrate the end of summer at Emmaus' Farewell Summer Festival 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 7.

The event at various sites in downtown Emmaus opens on the Triangle with a performance by the Emmaus Sentinels Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps. The event's schedule includes children's activities, cupcake decorating, a dog costume contest, an apple baking contest, a hot dog eating contest, a banana split eating contest, a chili cook-off and a scavenger hunt. The event concludes with an outdoor concert by "The Large Flowerheads" on the Triangle. For more details, call 610-965-2174.

Emmaus' Community Yard Sale will be held 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 7. Rain date is Sept. 8. It is not necessary to obtain a permit and no fee is required.

Emmaus Historical Society is participating in the community yard sale 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 7. Items for the sale may be delivered to the museum, 563 Chestnut St., noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 31 and noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 3 and Sept. 4. No deliveries will be accepted on the day of sale. Items not accepted: upholstered furniture, clothing and shoes. All proceeds benefit the Emmaus Historical Society Building Fund.

The Emmaus Main Street Partners will sponsor a sidewalk sale at various shops throughout Emmaus, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14. For information, call 610-965-2174.

The final concert in Emmaus' Summer Concert Series is the Macungie Band 6 p.m. Sept. 1 in the Emmaus Community Park Arts Pavilion.

The second annual Bluegrass in the Park Festival will be held 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 28 at Emmaus Community Park. This is an all-day event featuring multiple artists and a variety of craft and food vendors. For information, visit www.facebook.com/ emmaussec.

The free Saturday morning Zumba program, 9 to 9:45 a.m., continues through Sept. 28 at the Emmaus Community Park Arts Pavilion.

The Emmaus Farmers Market is held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday through Thanksgiving in the parking lot of National Penn Bank, 235 Main St. in downtown Emmaus. For information, visit www.emmausmarket.com.

St. Ann's Fall Fest, 415 S. Sixth St., an "Emmaus Community Event Right Here in Your Own Backyard," will be held Sept. 5 through 7. The festival which features local bands and entertainment every evening, Midway rides, a kids' area, small games of chance and a multitude of food stands has plenty of parking, a giant tent in case of rainy weather and free admission. Emmaus Senior Citizen's group resumes meetings for the fall Sept. 6. The group meets 1 p.m. the first Friday of each month at St. Matthew's Church, Fourth and Ridge streets. Any local senior citizen is welcome to attend. The programs for the September meetings are: Sept.6, a gospel singer; Sept. 13, Rick Roberts, keyboardist; a senior consultant will be the speaker Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 is game day. Penn State Master Gardener Doug Files will present the "History of Roses" at the Emmaus Garden Club's Sept. 10 meeting. Please note this is a date change from the club's regular first Tuesday meeting date. The public is welcome to attend. Doors open 12:30 p.m., refreshments are served, and the program starts 1 p.m. Meetings are held at Faith Presbyterian Church, Second and Cherokee streets.

Emmaus Historical Society will resume its monthly meetings 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Fifth and Chestnut streets. The program for the Sept. 18 meeting is "The Deischers - A Family of Educators." The society will hold a special membership meeting 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at St. John's Lutheran Church to present information on the proposed purchase of a new building for the museum. Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. Sept. 3 (please note this is a Tuesday due to the Labor Day holiday) and Sept. 16 in council chambers, 28 S. Fourth St. Offices are closed Sept. 2 for the holiday.

Compost Center hours change Sept. 25 and continue through Oct. 12: 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Registration begins Sept. 9 at the Emmaus Public Library for Suns and Stars story times. Suns story times are held 10:30 to 11 a.m. Thursdays for children ages two years old on or before Sept. 12. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The first session is Oct. 3. Stars story times are held 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays for 3 to 4 year olds. The first session is Oct. 2. The library will host its annual Community Heroes Day, 6 p.m. until dark Sept. 11. The event for all ages provides an opportunity to climb on a fire truck, look inside an ambulance, sit in a police car and meet and greet the people who help to keep us safe.

The library will present "Meet the e-Readers" 2 to 8 p.m. Sept 25. This is a service the library offers for those who own an e-reader (Kindle, Nook, Ipad, or other device). The library staff will be ready to help you use the various devices and help you download ebooks from the CLDL Overdrive library. This open house will include how to use Zinio – the downloadable magazine service provided by the library for free.

The library will again offer a program on genealogical searching, "Get A Clue…About Your Ancestors" 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 24. This session will be a very brief introduction to the many resources for this kind of research. Attendees will receive handouts of websites and print sources. Ancestry. com will be explored.

The Friends of the 1803 House have exciting plans for the Oct. 5 A Very Merrie Halloween. The event features storytelling and games, a Halloween costume parade and a visit from the Wildlands Conservancy with some "not-so-scary" creatures. A new baking contest will be held with three categories apple, pumpkin and Halloween. The historic house will be open for tours and the grounds will be filled with juried crafts and art for sale. Pulled pork sandwich and two sides platters will be for sale. Advance tickets for the platters will be available at the 1803 House table Sept. 1 at the Farmers Market or at Sweet Memories. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the event; take out will be available.
