Both Salisbury teams make playoffs
At first, it was not definite that Salisbury would be able to put two girls teams in the Lehigh Valley Summer Soccer League.
Not only did the Lady Falcons come up with enough players for two squads, but both teams put together solid showings that has head coach Rick Babyak excited for the upcoming high school season.
Composed on of mostly incoming freshman players, CSG Falcon White went 6-1-1 over the season in the early division and had one of the best defensive squads. They allowed just nine goals while under the guidance of Vic D'Oliveira, the Falcons' varsity assistant coach during the high school season.
"I was ecstatic because both teams played so well," said head coach Rick Babyak. "We were a little concerned in the beginning. We weren't sure how it would work getting two teams together. But right off the bat, there was a lot of interest.
"We do have a good group of returning girls that played very well, but we also have this group of incoming ninth graders that the one team was mainly comprised of. They were very strong as well. It's just a good situation."
A total of 14 freshmen participated in the summer league, and CSG Falcon White advanced to the quarterfinals of the playoffs where a 2-1 defeat to Southern Lehigh ended its season
CSG Falcon Blue, coached by Colin Ackerman, was made up of the upperclassmen, including 11 seniors. CSG Blue had most the players that will see significant time come the high school season. CSG Falcon Blue went 5-3 over the summer, and captured fourth place in its division. They too advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Tribe United Gold, 2-0.
"It's going to be interesting just to be able to blend the groups together and see how they come together," said Babyak. "It's going to be a fun and interesting time just to see how they come together."
In his second season at head coach, Babyak has a solid young group of players that will provide a lot of depth to an already experienced group that saw some time last season.
"I think last year we hurt a little bit because we didn't always have the depth, and it showed a little bit at the end of the season," said Babyak. "We had some key injuries toward the end of the season. You go out to a practice and we were just so light in numbers because so many were sitting on the sidelines trying to heal.
"But now we have such good depth there's going to be that ability to move people around and give people a break when they need a break."
Filling in the voids that last season's seniors have left upon graduating, a number of Falcons will be relied upon more come this year. Seniors Katelyn Bucchin and Christine Kotch, as well as junior MacKenzie Groff, are just a number of Falcons that come to mind in that regard.
