Baseball season goes on with Midnight Madness
By the time August rolls around, most high school baseball players are ready for a break. After long high school and legion seasons, no one would blame them if they wanted a week or two off before starting the school year.
A group of Salisbury players had other ideas. For the third straight season, the Falcons entered a team in the Midnight Madness baseball tournament held at Easton's Hackett Park.
The event benefits Miracle league of Northampton County, Dream Come True and Camelot for Children. Salisbury's teams are always among the top fund raisers at the tournament. They had also taken second place in 2011 and 2012.
This year's team, which had only one practice together with its full team after the Salisbury legion team went to the Region 2 playoffs, went 1-2 in the Midnight tournament, beating Hellertown but falling to Pen Argyl and the Lehigh Valley Storm, a tournament team that plays together regularly.
"They all gave everything they had," said the team's head coach, Steve Wagner.
The tournament is for players age 16 and under. The team was made up of mostly high school players, some that played varsity last year, and others that have a good chance to make a varsity roster next spring.
The Falcons' Justin Aungst led the way offensively, going 3-for-5 in the tournament while drawing four walks and knocking in four runs.
Kyle Hartzel picked up the win against Hellertown. He allowed just two hits in three innings, while striking out one and giving up only one earned run in the 10-4 victory.
The Falcons were leading the Storm 1-0 in the seventh behind a solid relief pitching effort from CJ Tocci, who threw three shut-down innings before errors led to a 7-1 loss.
Tournament games were scheduled for 1:15 a.m. and 8 a.m. on July 27 and 28. Salisbury's fourth game was rained out.
The rest of the team's roster included Justin Besz, Tucker Kuhlmann, Adam Ebner, Alex Nicholas, Mason Donaldson, Shane Wittman, Devin Irwin, Noah Adams and Chris Bishop.
Assisting Wagner were two other former Falcon varsity players in Tyler Tocci and Nick Vangeli.
