Reichenbach enjoyed record-breaking year

Dan Reichenbach grew up hearing stories from his dad about track and field.

His father was a jumper on the Salisbury track and field team during his high school years and held many Falcon records. Like his father, Reichenbach also is in the record books at Salisbury, and specializes as a jumper too, in the triple jump and long jump.

As a three-sport athlete during his senior year, participating in track and field, basketball and golf, Reichenbach had an impact for a team during every sport season. He placed first in both the triple jump and long jump in districts, while finishing second in the triple jump and 10th in long jump at states. He also helped guide the basketball team to a berth in the state tournament and a third place finish in districts.

For his accomplishments during the 2012-13 school year, Reichenbach, who will attend Lehigh University in the fall and continue his track and field career, was named the Salisbury Press Male Athlete of the Year.

"It means a lot," said Reichenbach of the award. "We had a lot of great athletes this year. I could name a handful that I could choose other than me. It feels good that my hard work is recognized.

"When I was little, my dad would always tell me stories of when he played. I guess I always had this idea that if he could do it, I could do it."

One of Reichenbach's main goals heading into the track and field campaign was setting the district record in the triple jump. He did just that, setting the 2A mark at 46-11 1/4, more than four inches longer than the previous record.

"That was one of my goals at the beginning of the season," said Reichenbach. "So when I went back and saw that number, I was pretty excited."

His father and his jumping coach, Virginia Sims, have helped Reichenbach over the course of his career.

"Not only did he lead me towards it, he helped me throughout the whole process," said Reichenbach of his father, also named Dan. "He was like a second coach to me.

"I like how there's a real one-on-one bond with my coach. She coaches everyone, but what I do isn't really effected by everyone else."

He's been playing basketball for much of his life, and played for SYA during his grade school years before suiting up for the high school team.

The highlights and accomplishments throughout his career on the basketball court are a plentiful as well. During his varsity time over the past three seasons, the Falcons had made three league tournament appearances (including a league title in 2011-12), made three district appearances (including a title in 2010-11), and two state appearances. This past season, he hit a half-court game-winner as time expired in districts against a Wilson team the Falcons had lost to in three previous meetings.

The small things will also remain in Reichenbach's memory.

"The shot will always be what I remember most," said Reichenbach. "But I think I'll always remember the little things like playing with my teammates, the things before a game, or things like that. Those kind of stick out to me."

He was named a Colonial League First-Team selection, and scored 224 points (8.2 points per game) as a senior under head coach Jason Weaver's guidance. His passing ability, ball-handling and defense made him one of the Falcons' most vital pieces. Over his final three seasons, the Falcons have put together a remarkable 59-22 record.

"He was a great coach," said Reichenbach. "He was tough at times, but he always had the right mindset of doing what's best for us."

Golf is one of Reichenbach's passions, and he's been a member of the team the past two seasons.

"I always had fun doing it," said Reichenbach. "I could go out there and shoot my best score or my worst score, and I'd always have a good time."

With the fall semester just around the corner, Reichenbach has been putting in the work during the offseason in preparation for the upcoming season. He's been following the team's lifting and conditioning programs, and plans on attending a few clinics in the near future.

"I'm kind of getting a feel what it's like to be in college," said Reichenbach. "I'm actually really excited to go out there and do some winter track. I've never gotten to do that before."
