Emmaus Borough Council recently recognized the efforts of several volunteer groups and individuals by naming them Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations to the Emmaus Main Street Partners for its community service and achievement (2010 Volunteer of the Year), John Eyer for his community service through the Emmaus Youth Association (2011 Volunteer of the Year) and Bob Boehmer for his winter paintings (2012 Volunteer of the Year). Congratulations to the honorees.

I received a message from the Emmaus Kiwanis Club listing some of the club's volunteer dates during August. The members will participate in a Miracle League game, will man the grills during a Wounded Warrior 5K run and picnic at Lone Lane Park and will be conducting clean up at the Emmaus Remembrance Garden. The Emmaus Rotary Club has also made generous donations to numerous organizations, including the Lower Macungie and Emmaus libraries and the Emmaus and Lower Macungie Youth associations. I know there are other Emmaus organizations not mentioned whose members are volunteering time and contributing funds for the betterment of the community. As long as I have lived in Emmaus I have been impressed with the time and effort civic groups and individuals have given to the community. Thank you one and all.

My best wishes that you have a memorable summer and as I sit here typing while the outside temperature hovers in the high 90s, best wishes that you stay cool. Please send your notices of upcoming events to Durdock@ aol.com or 913 Little Lehigh Drive or call 610-067-2661. The next deadline for the column is Aug. 21.
