Falcons earn No. 3 seed in playoffs

One of the goals for manager Scott Heppenheimer and the Salisbury legion baseball team at the beginning of the season was to earn a spot in the playoffs.

With that feat well in hand, the Falcons have their eyes set on a much higher goal a trip to Boyertown to participate in regionals.

That journey will begin on Wednesday when the Falcons host Lower Macungie, a team they beat twice in the regular season, in the first game of the eight-team double-elimination Lehigh Valley Legion playoff tournament. Heppenheimer and the Falcons are ready for the opportunity.

"Our goal, once the high school season was over, was just to get in the playoffs because we did play a lot of games," said Heppenheimer. "A lot of the teams in the league played a lot of games, but I think we played the most in a certain amount of time.

"Our goal was to get in the playoffs, and then get to Boyertown. None of these guys, [Nic] Ampietro and all these seniors have ever advanced out of the legion. Our goal is to get to regionals."

To do so, the Falcons will have to at least get to the championship game of the Lehigh Valley legion tournament. Should the league's regular season champ, North Parkland, get to the title game, Salisbury would advance to regionals just by making it to the championship.

If North Parkland doesn't, the winner of the championship will join the Buffaloes in regionals.

The two teams ahead of Salisbury in the standings, North Parkland and Southern Lehigh, have given the Falcons trouble this season. Salisbury's four losses have come against both of those squads, but neither team has seen one of the Falcons' aces, and the Falcons were missing a couple of key pieces in three of those games."

"North Parkland is solid," said Heppenheimer. "They can throw four or five pitchers at you, and Southern Lehigh has two quality pitchers also.

"I like our chances with a full team against anybody in the league."

Despite scoring 10 runs in each of two victories against Lower Mac and outscoring them by a margin of 20-2, Heppenheimer understands that any team can knock anyone out.

"Even though we did beat them twice, Lower Mac just knocked Southern Lehigh out of first place the other day," said Heppenheimer.

The pitching staff will be relied upon heading into postseason play, and the trio of Justin Aungst, Nic Ampietro, and Tyler Cooperman all figure to have their chances on the mound at some point.

"Besides two or three guys in the lineup that are hitting all season, we're not really hitting as a team right now," said Heppenheimer.

"Hopefully we get some batting practice on Monday and Tuesday and straighten things out. If we score a couple runs and play defense we should be OK."

Game time is set for 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Salisbury High School.
