Camp Cementon column
Camp Cementon kicked off the 2013 season Hawaiian style.
Campers gathered at Egypt Park this week for games, crafts and much more. In order to capture the tropical mood, the children crafted leis from foam, straws and elastic string.
Campers also participated in a relay race while running in grass skirts and leis and tested their flexibility in the limbo. Other activities included name games, freeze dance, heads up, seven up and one of the campers' favorite games, dodge ball.
A threat of thunderstorms did not dissuade the Camp Cementon gang from going to the pool each afternoon. Luck was on the campers' side as they dodged the rain each day!
On Wednesday, the campers and counselors headed to Jordan Lanes to show off their bowling skills. Splits, spares and strikes were plentiful in each lane. Many campers had great scores, but Emily K. came out on top, bowling a score of 118.
On Thursday, campers completed a second craft; painting bookmarks to donate to the Whitehall and Coplay public libraries.
In a creative spin on painting, the children decorated bookmarks using marble painting and bubble painting techniques. Colors and bubbles were flying as the campers put their best efforts into creating a craft to donate, rather than keep for themselves. After a short discussion, the children decided they felt good about their work because they were being "nice, kind and generous" toward others.
On Friday two campers of the week were selected. These campers attended camp every day, tried their best while playing each game, followed all of the camp and pool rules and exhibited a positive attitude all week.
Camp Cementon's first campers of the week were Lennon D. and Lucas H.
The campers and counselors had a great time this week and are looking forward to seven more weeks of fun!
