The consequences of social networking

To the Editor:

Just 10 years ago, social networking was unheard of, but today it is an important part of our daily lives.

Teenagers, who have a propensity for being social, use social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to communicate with each other outside of the classroom.

Although there are undeniable benefits to using sites such as these to keep in touch with friends, not all teenagers realize the full extent of the consequences that also come with these networks.

Social networking sites can be beneficial in helping people to learn how to interact with each other and express empathy. Studies by Michelle Catranis in "Social Media" showed that "forms of new media like Facebook or Twitter help teach current youth how to socialize, explore interests, develop skills and foster independence." However, online interactions can also be hostile and have a negative effect on teenagers.

Cyberbullying is a form of bullying in which the bully can harass the victim from behind the safety of a computer screen. This act is cowardly and leaves the victim feeling isolated from their peers and likely to experience anxiety and depression.

Social networking can also have a negative impact on teens' health and academic performance. Spending a significant amount of time on the Internet means spending a significant amount of time being sedentary and inactive, which can lead to an increased risk of obesity. Studies also show students who spend most of their time on social media sites are likely to have lower grades.

If used correctly, social networks can be beneficial to teenagers. However, social networking should be enjoyed in moderation and teenagers should try to spend time interacting with their friends and family face-to-face. Teenagers should also try to be considerate to others during their online interactions, so everyone can enjoy social networking.
