Weather and time worked against Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team as it was eliminated from the tournament last week after losses to Tri-Cape and Burlington County.
Lehigh Valley's first game last Wednesday resulted in an early morning 5-2 loss to Tri-Cape, but Lehigh Valley came back with a 4-0 victory over Olympic Colonial in the afternoon.
Salisbury infielder, Meghan Williams, had two hits in the game against Olympic Colonial. Her first-inning double scored Northampton's Hannah Peters, who had also hit a double to get on base.
Northern Lehigh's Amber Thomas and Pen Argyl's Emily Smull pitched the shutout for Lehigh Valley.
Lehigh Valley's win against Olympic Colonial provided a needed boost for the local team, which would have to wait approximately five hours before its final game of the day.
About to face an undefeated Burlington County team, the game was further delayed by thunder and lightning.
Burlington County took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, and scored four more runs in the third. Lehigh Valley scored two runs in the fifth inning, but the game was eventually called on account of darkness.
"Coming back in the third game was really difficult because of the five-hour game break, and then the ump called the game," said Williams. "We just were not generating offense. Our defense was pretty sound."
Williams, in her first year on the Carpenter Cup team, hit a double to center field in the 8-2 loss.
"I had so much fun. I can't describe how exciting it was. I had a great time, and I loved playing for those coaches," she said.
The Lehigh Valley team was coached by John Eyer of Emmaus, Scott Bortz, and Blake Morgan.
