MACUNGIE COLUMN Celebrate Fourth of July in Macungie
Macungie Pool will be open noon to 8 p.m. through Labor Day, weather permitting. Weekend hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. For information, call 610-966-5757.
The Macungie Farmers Market will be open 4 to 7 p.m. every Thursday through October except July 4 and Aug. 23. Weekly events are listed at www.macungie.pa.us/farmersmarket.htm. The market features local family farmers providing home grown food: fruits, vegetables, meat products, eggs, baked goods, plants and more. Parking is available at the park parking lot and along North Walnut Street.
There will be an Old Fashioned Fourth of July Picnic beginning 10 a.m. July 4 at Macungie Memorial Park. The bicycle/ wagon parade begins 10 a.m. There will be a duck race in the creek 11 a.m. Macungie Band will perform 11:30 a.m. in the bandshell. There will also be games and contests for children. The fire department and ambulance corps will have equipment on display. Basketball, baseball and volleyball fields are available but participants must bring their own equipment.

The fourth annual Ben Event will take place July 19 and 20 at Macungie Memorial Park. Ben Yorgey was an Emmaus High School graduate/special needs student who died in 2009. Ben's parents Kent and Ardyth Yorgey have established the Ben Yorgey Foundation to help graduating high school students with similar disabilities lead independent and productive lives. Each year 10 special education students who most exemplify Ben's love of life and people will receive a scholarship to help the student during his first year after high school.
The event will open with WFMZ Sports Director Troy Hein throwing the first pitch at a Special Olympics Softball Game 6 p.m. Weather permitting, he will broadcast live from the event. Pre-game activities will begin 5:30 p.m. The IronPigs Ball Girls will make their first official appearance as ambassadors for the IronPigs. DJ Scott Bateman will provide music for the festivities. The band "The Large Flowerheads" will provide music of the 60s at 8 p.m. Registrants may pick up their 5K race packets 5:30 to 7 p.m. July 19 at Macungie Memorial Hall.
Events on July 20 begin with a 5K race 8:30 a.m. (registration 7 a.m.) and a half-mile kid's run at 9:20 a.m. Runners can pre-register online at active.com. A Kids' Fun Dash immediately follows the Kids' Run. A one mile Fun Walk begins 8:40 a.m. (registration 7:30 a.m.). Online registration for both runs and the walk is available through July 17 at active.com.
Breakfast in the Park will be held 8 to 11 a.m. A Special Olympics swim meet starts 10:30 a.m. The meet features Lehigh County Special Olympics Swim Team and the Bethlehem Special Olympics Swim Team. Ben's Block Party will take place 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with carnival games, face painting, a moon bounce, demonstrations and emergency equipment. Special performances will include Jake Kaligis, a K-9 demonstration from a local police force, Armetta's Grand Jete Studio of Dance and Lehigh Valley Martial Arts. A Chinese auction will be held Friday night and Saturday.
New this year is a 3v3 Soccer Tournament sponsored by Athletes for Christ 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 20. There will also be a Bear Swamp Derby starting at 12:30 p.m. For more information about the Ben Yorgey Foundation, go to www.heyiknowyou.org.
There will be a Wheels of Time Cruise Night 6 to 10 p.m. July 20 at Macungie Memorial Park with music by "School's Out." Cars can start arriving 5 p.m.

Macungie Pool will host the 2013 Suburban League Swim Team Championships 9 a.m. July 21.
Concordia Lutheran Church will hold Vacation Bible School July 21 to 25. There will be a family session 12:30 to 2 p.m. July 21 and youth sessions 9 a.m. to noon July 22 to 25. The "Go Tell It on the Mountain" will be held for ages four years through third grade. Rock Camp will be held at the same time for grades four through eight. Das Awkscht Fescht, one of the country's largest antique and classic car shows, will take place Aug. 2 to 4 at Macungie Memorial Park. The featured car this year is the Buick. Gates open 6 a.m. for walk-ins and show cars enter after 7:30 a.m. The flea market remains open until dusk and craft vendors are open until 9 p.m. Musical entertainment continues until 10:30 p.m. Aug. 2 and 3. There will be ongoing entertainment in the bandshell throughout the weekend. Other activities during the 3-day event include bingo, refreshments, arts, crafts, antiques and collectibles. Kids' activities include entertainers such as magicians, jugglers and clowns, Crayola Corner and a moon bounce. The playground and swimming pool will also be open. There will also be an indoor and outdoor toy show Aug. 3 in Macungie. The outdoor show will be held in the parking areas of Shoemaker and Macungie Elementary Schools and the indoor show will be at Eyer Middle School.
