Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team, which includes Salisbury players Jenna Keet and Meghan Williams, defeated Philadelphia Catholic's Carpenter Cup team, 10-5, in its first game of the double-elimination tournament on Monday at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
Keet played in left field for the first four innings, contributing a line drive up the middle, a walk, and two RBIs. Williams' stats were unavailable as of Press deadlines.
Philadelphia Catholic took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
"We weren't really [concerned] because we knew we could hit," Keet said.
Lehigh Valley muddled through the extreme heat to score its first runs in the third inning.
"It's really, really hot out, but because we're all tournament players, we're used to it," said Keet.
That inning proved to be the beginning of the end for Philadelphia Catholic.
Lehigh Valley third baseman, Emily Cecchini, said, "In the third inning, there were two girls on base, and [Pen Argyl's] Emily Smull hit a shot and put us ahead. After that, we opened up and kept hitting. We ended up hitting really well."
Smull was the starting pitcher. Emmaus's Olivia Marcks finished the game for Lehigh Valley. The hot, humid conditions were something Marcks had to battle through on the mound.
"I felt pretty good, but it's extra hot out. I've played down south, and it's not even as bad down there as it is up here," Marcks said.
Lehigh Valley got a reprieve, however, as the team was about to warm up for its second game, against Tri-Cape, thunderstorms postponed the rest of the day's games.
Lehigh Valley will return to FDR Park at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday to face Tri-Cape, who defeated Berks County in its first game of the tournament.
