Falcons improve to 8-3 in LV Legion
Due to a high school baseball season that stretched into early June, the Salisbury legion team endured a start to the season that included 11 games over 10 days, a brutal stretch to say the least.
However, Sunday's 10-0 victory over Fullerton in six innings at Harry Glasser Field stationed the Falcons at 8-3. Their only losses came against Southern Lehigh and North Parkland, the top two teams in the league, and with the All-Star game set for Monday, the Falcons are pleased with how they capped off that long stretch.
"With all the players that we have, I feel like everybody rotated real well," said Nic Ampietro. "A lot of people had to play out of position, but they stepped up and did the job."
Starting pitcher Tyler Cooperman, who allowed two hits and struck out five over six innings, got all the run support he needed from the gate. He had command of both his fastball and curveball throughout the night, never allowing Fullerton to get in any rhythm offensively.
Cooperman led off the top of the first with a double. A two-run double from Ampietro and an inside-the-park homerun from Evan Kulig that scored two runs helped the Falcons jump out to a 5-0 lead after the first.
"I was just trying to put it in play," said Ampietro of his first plate appearance. "When there are runners on base, it's better to put it in play than strike out."
Kulig again reached base in the third and later crossed home plate, and Ampietro tallied a two-run single in the fourth to put the Falcons ahead 8-0. Ampietro went 2-for-4 on the night with four RBIs and a run scored.
"The run support helped a lot," said Cooperman. "Of course we had 10 runs and that always helps when you're pitching. You have the ability to attack down the middle a little more, and just go right at them and not worry about pitching around people."
The Falcons had previously flip-flopped between wins and losses over the past four games, but the win over Fullerton gave them two in a row and a little bit of confidence during their break.
"We have off [Monday] and it's good to end on a 10-0 win and coming into the next game with a lot of players that weren't here today," said Ampietro.
"I think everyone is still healthy," said Cooperman. "We got guys on vacation right now [and] they'll be back Saturday. We'll be fresh next week. We're doing all right."
Four Falcons were selected as members of the Lehigh Valley Legion Baseball All-Star team, which was held on Monday at First Energy Field in Reading: Nic Ampietro, Tyler Cooperman, Charles Rogers, and Justin Aungst. Noah Adams, Evan Kulig, and Javier Rivera participated in the Showcase for the Lehigh Valley team beforehand.
Results from Tuesday's game against Northern Valley were not available at time of press. The Falcons will host North Parkland on Thursday at 6 p.m., and will have revenge on their minds after a 10-1 loss to the Buffaloes a week ago.
