Emmaus not far from playoff berth
If Emmaus could get pitching like it saw from Jonathan Arguello Sunday night against Coplay, things would be going much easier for the 4-7 team. Arguello threw a complete game, allowing just one unearned run, in a 6-1 win over Coplay at Community Park.
Unfortunately, Emmaus is low on pitching and has had to push some position players into duty on the mound. For Arguello, he's just adapted by keeping things simple for himself.
"I don't try to throw hard," said Arguello, who is now 2-0 on the season. "I just try to get the ball over the plate and then rely on our defense to make the plays. We have a pretty good defense, so I don't worry if they make contact, as long as I'm throwing strikes."
Against Coplay, Arguello walked just one hitter and it came in the seventh inning, although he did hit a batter in the first inning. The rest of the way, he gave up just three hits and, in keeping with his philosophy, struck out just one hitter in the game.
Offensively, Emmaus took an early lead on back-to-back doubles by Hunter Russiano and Cody Eastland in the bottom of the first inning. Russiano would later single and score in a three-run sixth inning and Eastland would later add a base-hit in the fourth. Jacob Fick had two RBI singles and scored a run for Emmaus in the win.
Emmaus head coach Mike Anderson was happy with how things went against Coplay, but admits he's having to piece things together right now.
"We've had to press some of our position players into pitching, but everybody is doing what they can to help us win," said Anderson. "Jonathan threw well tonight and did what we stress, just throw strikes. You can't really ask for more than that."
Right now, Emmaus is on the outside looking in for the playoffs, but it trails West Allentown by just a half game for the final spot. The two teams play in Allentown this coming Sunday and earlier in the season, Emmaus grabbed a 6-5 win over West Allentown.
Emmaus plays rival Lower Macungie (7-6) at home Wednesday night before hosting South Parkland (1-12) on Thursday, ending the regular season home schedule. After the showdown with West Allentown, Emmaus has a double-header against Fullerton (5-5) and wraps up the season at Northern Valley (7-6).
"We just need to do the fundamentals and keep ourselves focused and see how things end up for us," said Anderson, who is in his first season as the Emmaus coach. "We have some winnable games and we're playing better than we were early in the season. So, we're not out of it right now."
