Emmaus High School's Olivia Marcks pitched the final four innings in the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup softball team's 10-5 victory over Philadelphia Catholic's Carpenter Cup team on Monday at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
"I felt pretty good, but it's extra hot out," Marcks said. "I've played down south, and it's not even as bad down there as it is up here."
Marcks and the rest of the Lehigh Valley team got a reprieve as they were about to warm up for their second game of the double-elimination tournament when thunderstorms postponed the rest of the day's games.
Philadelphia Catholic took the early lead on Monday morning, scoring its first two runs against Lehigh Valley in the first inning.
"It didn't get to any of us because they scored so early in the game, and we know we can hit," said Marcks, who was 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Lehigh Valley scored its first runs in the third inning, which was the beginning of a hitting frenzy which lasted throughout the rest of the game.
"[Saucon Valley's] Arastina Barry...She has so much speed. She's our lead-off batter, and she gets us off to a good start," Marcks said.
Pen Argyl's Emily Smull pitched the first three innings before Marcks finished the game.
"The other team chased the high ball a lot, so we used that to get them swinging at it. There were a lot of pop-ups, a lot of ground-outs," said Marcks.
Lehigh Valley will return to FDR Park on Wednesday to play its second game of the double-elimination tournament, taking on Tri-Cape, who defeated Berks earlier in the day.
