LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Salisbury tops SL in summer hoops

The Salisbury boys basketball team is slowly, but surely, forming into the squad that will represent the Falcons in the winter season.

Following the end of the season for the high school baseball team, a number of integral parts returned to the basketball lineup last week. After a baseball season that lasted into mid-June, Justin Aungst was one of a number of baseball players back in the lineup.

Aungst, a vital part of the Falcons' frontcourt last season, tallied a team-high 13 points in helping secure a 41-34 victory against rival Southern Lehigh last Thursday. The win stations the Falcons at 2-2 on the season.

"It's definitely different," said Aungst. "I'm definitely not in basketball shape; it's totally two different sports.

"I felt like I wasn't as winded tonight. I felt better tonight. It's tough when we didn't play together a lot recently, so we're going to start getting comfortable with each other again."

It was Aungst who helped push the Falcons past the Spartans late in the second half. After two Falcon free throws and an Eddie Sanchez driving layup put Salisbury up four and broke a 33-33 tie, Aungst found Naveed Hadian for a layup that made it 39-33. Aungst then got out in transition and his layup in the final moments halted any possible Spartan comeback.

"Just play like I always do, let my defense turn into my offense," said Aungst. "I'm not going to change anything because its worked for me in the past."

The Falcons held a 10-point lead late in the first half, but the Spartans scored the final eight points of the half to make it a two-point game.

Aungst and Austin Uhl will be key members down low in leading the Falcons this season, who lost two of their top scoring guards from last season.

"There's going to be scoring lost, but I have a feeling that a couple of our guards are going to step up. Brad Vangeli and Naveed Hadian's minutes are going to increase this year. Hopefully they fill in for Tyler [Brown] and Dan [Reichenbach] and bring some scoring to us because I know we lost a lot with those two."

Vangeli, also returning from the baseball team, scored three points against the Spartans. Eddie Sanchez tallied 10 for the Falcons.
