Union Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, has purchased a giant inflatable movie screen to provide free outdoor entertainment on summer evenings.

The first feature will be "Oz, the Great and Powerful" on June 28.

The evening will start with food and fellowship at 7:30 p.m. and the movie will be shown at dusk.

A family PG-rated fantasy, the film tells the story of a circus magician who is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the Land of Oz.

Church committees will supply hot dogs, popcorn and beverages.

Viewers are invited to bring a snack, side dish or dessert to share.

In case of rain, the show will move indoors. Future movie nights are July 12 and Aug. 9.

The Anxiety Support Group of Union Lutheran is sponsoring a shoe collection, "Saving Soles," for the people of Guatemala.

The poverty rate in Guatemala is so extreme, many people do not even own shoes.

Adults and children walk to market, to school and to work on rocky dirt roads with bare feet.

Organizers are looking for sturdy shoes and sneakers, new or slightly used, but no high heels.

They are also collecting socks and stuffed animals for hospitalized children.

Donated shoes should be placed in a bag and marked with size and gender of the person they are for, if possible.

Union United Church of Christ, Neffs, will have its first outdoor worship service of the season at 10:30 a.m. June 30, in the grove.

Some seating will be available but bring a chair or blanket, if you can.

Phil Wehr, of the property committee, reports the grove has been thoroughly cleared of debris and damage caused by Hurrricane Sandy last fall.

Six new trees have been planted. With the spectacular display of daffodils and other spring flowers, families are once again enjoying the beautiful church grove.

The Friends of Parkland Community Library are presenting "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" July 12. The IronPigs will take on the Buffalo Bisons in Coca Cola Park. A ticket includes an all-you-can-eat picnic buffet and a seat in the PPL Picnic Patio.
