Champs again Behind a big night from Justin Aungst, Salisbury won its second straight Colonial League baseball title by shutting out Southern Lehigh last week

A 3-1 loss to Wilson back in the beginning of the month was the only blemish on a potential perfect season for the Salisbury baseball team. Pitcher Justin Aungst, unfortunately, was credited with the Falcons' only defeat of the season despite only two Wilson hits.

Not even two weeks later though, Aungst was handed the ball in the Falcons' most crucial game to date in the Colonial League championship game against Southern Lehigh. And he did more than justify his pregame all-star selection.

Aungst pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout and knocked in four runs as the Falcons (21-1 overall; 15-1 Colonial League) defeated the Spartans (16-6 overall; 12-4 in Colonial League) 6-0 last Thursday night at Limeport Stadium to capture their second consecutive league championship.

"It definitely fueled us, but we just go game-by-game," said Aungst of that Wilson defeat. "That was behind us awhile ago, and we came out and played a great game tonight."

"We always want to win a title," said head coach Mike Pochron. "That's our goal get in this tournament and win this. Now we'll start thinking about playing in the district tournament."

Aungst, who went 2-for-2 with two walks and four RBIs, helped his case on the mound early, blasting a two-run home run to left field that gave the Falcons an early 2-0 lead. They scored two more in the third inning when Mason Kresley connected on a two-out triple that scored Nic Ampietro and pinch-runner Chaz Orlena.

"Getting that gives him all the confidence in the world," said Pochron of the early run support. "I think that he relaxed a little bit more. He was very dominant tonight."

Aungst capped his night at the plate with at two-run triple in the sixth that scored Evan Kulig and Brad Vangeli, who went 2-for-4 on the night.

"We all play well together, and we always play defense," said Aungst. "All the pitchers know they can let the other team put the ball in play because the defense is always so good behind us."

Meanwhile, the Spartans were kept hitless through five innings. It wasn't until the sixth inning that a bloop single dropped and found grass between third base and left field. Aungst finished the day with six strikeouts and one walk, while surrendering just two Spartan hits.

The Falcons, the No. 1 seed in the upcoming District 11 2A baseball tournament, won't play again until Friday night in the semifinals. They'll host the winner of No.4 seed Catasauqua and No. 5 seed Pine Grove at 7:15 p.m.
