Falcons take fifth at league meet

Things have certainly changed from a year ago.

After finishing fourth in the 1600-meter run and 13th in the 800 at last year's Colonial League Meet, Kyle Gonoude improved on those marks in this year's meet to help the Salisbury boys finish fifth as a team.

Gonoude, a Salisbury sophomore, won the 1600 with a time of 4:28.26 and captured second in both the 800 (2:01.39) and (9:53.86) during this season's meet, held last Tuesday and Wednesday at Whitehall High School.

"That was my goal either to do my seed or medal," said Gonoude. "My goal was to try and get points for the team. We were in third place, and we didn't win a meet all year, so I was looking for some pride."

Gonoude got off to a quick start in the 1600 and never looked back in capturing gold.

"I got a really good start, and then I just tried to kick it and keep it away from [Catasauqua's Anthony] Brinkley so he couldn't get in range," said Gonoude.

Recovering from a back injury, Dan Reichenbach helped the boys side with a first-place finish in the triple jump with a personal record of 45-feet, 7 inches. He leaped 45-6 last year and 45-4 recently at the Allen Invitational was his previous best this year. While he captured his best mark yet, Reichenbach had his eyes set on the record of 46-0 1/4.

"I knew there was a lot more there," said Reichenbach. "All three of those, I was at least 10 inches. The record was 46, so if in any of those I hit the board, I think I would've got the record."

He also placed third in the high jump with at 21-2 1/2, his highest mark since suffering that early-season back injury.

Austin Bartholomew's throw of 162-6 was good enough for second place in the javelin.

Dylan Bonge took second in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet. Tommy Walters finished fifth in the 3200 meter run.

Salisbury's girls team also came in fifth place in the Colonial League Meet. The Lady Falcons excelled in a number of the field events.

Kaitlin Toman separated herself from the rest of the pack in the pole vault with a mark of 11-03. Her height not only earned her first place in the event, but it was a new personal best after previously recording 10-6.

"I have gotten 11-3 in practice recently after the regular season meets were over," said Toman. "This was the first meet after I got it in practice. I was just excited and I wanted to get it there. It was just icing on the cake.

"I've been going to Vertical Assault," added Toman, "and that has helped a whole lot."

Toman also captured third place in the long jump with a mark of 17-0 1/4, just behind teammate Lindsay Bauer. That mark was also a big jump from her previous personal best of 15-11.

"I didn't think I was going to jump something like that, let alone get third place," said Toman. "I was just happy to be a part of the league meet."

Bauer's mark of 17-1 earned her second place in the long jump. She added a fourth place finish in the 200 (27.52) and a seventh place finish in the 400 Meter Dash (1:01.90).

Kennedy Freed took second in the javelin (107-07). Holly Szita placed third in high jump (5-00) and the girls 4x800 meter relay team took second place.

A number of Falcons will participate in this week's District 11 Meet on Wednesday and Thursday at Blue Mountain High School.
