Emmaus boys lax falls in 3 overtimes
Emmaus tried to put the game out of a reach again and again in the second half of Monday's Lehigh Valley Conference boys lacrosse championship game.
The Hornets took a two-goal lead three times in the second half. Each time Parkland answered to get back within a goal.
Finally with 12.5 seconds left, Parkland's Josh Pope tied the game for the first time since early in the second half. Two and a half overtimes later, Trojan senior Brett Kudlak popped in the game-winner to give the Trojans their first LVC boys lacrosse title.
"We just never put them away," said Emmaus head coach Scott Ketcham. "There are a lot of things that didn't go our way. We didn't finish the ball well at the end. We had plenty of opportunities in overtime and came up a little bit short. But this isn't the end. We have an angry team now."
Both teams move on to the district tournament. Emmaus earns the No. 3 seed in Class AAAA.
The Hornets trailed early in Monday's conference title game, but they made up a 4-2 deficit with a pair of goals late in the second half.
Drew Phillipes scored on a pass from Claude Bradshaw with 4:52 left in the first half. Marc Feldman assisted on Nicholas Tonno's game-tying goal with 3:07 left in the first half.
Tonno took a pass from Noah Howells and made it 5-4 to start the third-quarter scoring. Zack Bernhard's goal with 5:49 left in the third period put Emmaus ahead by two for the first time in the game.
Parkland closed it to 6-5 early in the fourth quarter, but Tonno's third goal of the game (assisted by Feldman) pushed the Hornet lead back to two.
When Parkland cut it to 7-6, Berhnard scored for Emmaus' last two-goal margin of the night.
Parkland scored two goals in the final 3:02 to tie the game. The second came after a delay of game penalty on the Hornets gave Parkland the ball with 30 seconds left.
Teams have 20 seconds after a time out ends to put the ball in play. Ketcham said one of his players was tying his shoe.
"Every time you have a game, someone is tying his shoe," he said, goin on to name the official who enforced the rule. "I don't know why Neal Kennedy made the call. It is part of the rules and we'll learn from it. It's not going to kill us. We'll be back from it. This play will not define our season."
Both teams had chances in overtime. Both goalies came up big.
Emmaus' all-league net-minder Garrett Miers stopped a few Parkland attempts, including a point-blank shot by Steven Chenworth a minute and a half into the first overtime.
Parkland's Jameal Hadeed matched Miers stop for stop, holding the five-time LVC champ Emmaus scoreless for three overtimes until Kudlak ended the game with 2:04 left in the third overtime.
"It was a great game," said Ketcham. "They have a tremendous defense. They wanted this. They played hard. You've got to congratulate them."
