Baseball team settles for split in doubleheader

Emmaus and Parkland were initially scheduled to meet back on April 18, but three rainouts pushed the game back to the final game of the regular season and made for an interesting scenario.

The scheduling resulted in both teams having to play double-headers on the final day of the Lehigh Valley Conference regular season and Emmaus downed Central Catholic 9-3, while Parkland avenged an earlier loss to Whitehall by beating the Zephyrs 6-2.

With those wins in the books, the Emmaus and Parkland match-up meant that the winner would go into the LVC Tournament as the top seed to play fourth-seeded Liberty, while the loser would fall to being the third seed and facing Whitehall. While Emmaus held an early lead, Parkland was able to come-from-behind and grab a 4-3 win on a walk-off two-run single by Damon Muth.

Emmaus scored three runs in the top of the third when Dan Findlay doubled to drive home two runs and Jason Fatzinger followed with a base hit to drive in Findlay. The Trojans came back in the bottom of the inning when they scored two runs and the game stayed 3-2 until the bottom of the seventh inning. They strung together four straight hits in the bottom of the seventh to take the 4-3 win and the LVC regular season title.

The loss dropped Emmaus' season record to 17-3 overall and 12-2 in the LVC. Parkland finished the LVC season at 13-1 to grab the top seed, while Whitehall was also 12-2, but beat Emmaus in their only meeting this season to grab the two seed. Liberty won the LVC East division with a 10-4 record and will be the fourth-seed and will meet Parkland in the tournament.

"We made some mistakes again and they took advantage of them," said Emmaus head coach John Schreiner. "I still like our chances, though, and we just have to play a little better now that the postseason is starting."

In their earlier meeting with Whitehall, the Hornets trailed 3-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth, but tied the game with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Whitehall got a single run in the top of the sixth before pounding Emmaus for eight runs in the seventh to take a 12-3 win. The 12 runs were the most Emmaus allowed this season, eclipsing the seven runs they allowed to both Easton and Liberty in games won by Emmaus.

No matter what happens in the LVC Tournament, the Hornets are qualified for the District 11 playoffs that begin next Monday and wind up with the championship game at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown on May 29. The District 11 champion will then head off to the PIAA Tournament which begins on June 3.

"We've got strong pitching and that will take you a long way," said Schreiner. "We need to eliminate some mistakes and find a way to put a team away when we have them on the ropes. We're capable of doing that, it's just a matter of executing."
